Funeral services for Louis F. Drummeter Jr., a retired Naval Research Laboratory scientist, have been scheduled for 11 a.m. April 7 at Our Lady of Angels chapel at Charlestown Retirement Community, 719 Maiden Choice Lane in Catonsville. Family visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until 11 a.m.

More and more Marylanders are living their twilight years in style.Upscale retirement communities are growing rapidly across the nation and in Maryland, where the number has nearly doubled, to 29, since 1980.And nowhere are they more prominent than in Baltimore County, which has an even dozen, ranging in size from Glenarm's pastoral Glen Meadows, with its intimate campus of 262 residents, to granddaddy Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, which opened in 1983 and has 2,500 residents.

When residents of the Charlestown Retirement Community saw the big black bird with the red bill swimming quietly among the wild ducks on their year-old pond, they could hardly believe their eyes.Some of the more enthusiastic bird-watchers among them had traveled Down Under to see Australian black swans in their native habitat, and here was one of the exotic creatures paddling in their back yard in Catonsville.The swan, nicknamed Charlestown Charlie though its sex is unknown, has no visible identification bands or markers, said Charlestown spokeswoman Elizabeth Malis.

Each community costs roughly $250 million and there's plenty of competition from alternative kinds of housing for the elderly.

John William Mazz, 91, an accountant and veteran who served in the Army during World War II, died Tuesday of heart failure at Renaissance Gardens at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville. Born in Baltimore, Mr. Mazz graduated from Polytechnic Institute in 1929. He worked as an accountant for a real estate company and as a bookkeeper for an auto club. Mr. Mazz was a member of the American Legion Post 154 for 53 years. He also was a 32nd degree Mason, said his cousin, Margaret West of Mechanicsburg, Ohio.
