A development team has been selected for a vacant 1.1-acre lot in Charles Village owned by the Johns Hopkins University. Armada Hoffler, a real estate construction and management firm based in Virginia Beach, Va., will lead the development of a mixed-use complex on the site at the southwest corner of 33rd and St. Paul streets, according to a recent statement by the university. Johns Hopkins bought the land in 2009. Beatty Development Group LLC and Skye Hospitality LLC, both based in Baltimore, will be working with Armada Hoffler on the project, the university said.

An adult male was shot in the head in Charles Village shortly before 11 p.m. last night, according to the Baltimore Police Department's Twitter feed . Homicide detectives are investigating the incident, which occurred in the 2900 block of North Calvert Street, police said. No other information about the crime was immediately available.

The body of a woman found in a Charles Village apartment Saturday was so decomposed that police have been unable to confirm an identity or determine whether there was foul play involved, Baltimore police said Sunday. According to Detective Donny Moses, a police spokesman, the body was found Saturday afternoon at 123 W. 29th St., on the edge of the Charles Village neighborhood just south of the Johns Hopkins University campus. That address is for the Wyman House, a mixed-income building of 168 efficiency and one-bedroom apartments that is owned by the Housing Authority of Baltimore City.

Baltimore officers found themselves on the defensive Saturday during a Charles Village meeting at which the Police Department's commitment to eradicating crime in the community was questioned. The meeting, prompted by the fatal stabbing of Stephen B. Pitcairn, a Johns Hopkins University researcher who was killed July 25 during a robbery in the 2600 block of St. Paul St., erupted into contention as residents disagreed over the effectiveness of crime-fighting efforts. Residents accused Northern District police supervisors of failing to assign enough officers to Charles Village and neglecting to keep track of repeat offenders.

A 22-year-old man was found shot to death inside his Charles Village apartment Thursday night, according to a spokesman for the Baltimore Police Department. Police said the body was found by a friend who hadn't been able to reach the victim for several hours. The victim was identified as Brandon Hudson, who lives in the first floor apartment in the 2900 block of North Calvert St., where his body was found. Police said he had been shot in the head while lying on a couch. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi there was no sign of forced entry to the apartment and no gun was recovered.

The line between subtle and bland can be small. As I ate pizza from Maxie's in Charles Village, my mind kept jumping back and forth between the two adjectives. The pizzas have thin, well-made crusts, but it was the toppings that gave me pause. Sometimes they had delicate flavors, while other times they were dull. The white eggplant pizza ($18.95 for a large), with baked eggplant, spinach, mozzarella and ricotta cheese, plus garlic and seasoning, had distinct spinach and garlic notes.

Baltimore police have released a composite sketch of a possible suspect in the November stabbing and attempted robbery of a man at a gas station in Charles Village. Police said the incident occurred about 5 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, in the 2200 block of North Charles St. The 27-year-old victim had been stabbed several times, police said, and has been treated and released from a hospital. Police said the victim and a friend were at the gas station when they were approached by two men who asked for a light.

A man who said he was armed with a gun sexually assaulted and tried to rape a Johns Hopkins University student early Saturday, an attack that city police said occurred in an alley two blocks from the North Baltimore campus. The university issued a public safety bulletin on Monday and Baltimore police confirmed the attack, which occurred in Charles Village. The victim was treated at Union Memorial Hospital. No arrests have been made. Anthony Guglielmi, a Baltimore Police Department spokesman, said the 20-year-old victim was walking to her campus apartment or dorm when she was attacked about 1:20 a.m. by a man in a parking lot in the 3200 block of Lovegrove St. The street, which resembles an alley and widens behind homes and businesses for parking, runs north to south between the heavily traveled thoroughfares of North Charles and St. Paul streets.
