EUNICE SMITH LAWSON Died peacefully at home on June 21, 2004, after a long illness. Her family and friends will sorely miss her. She was the beloved mother of 5 children: Marty & Janie Lawson, Sue Lawson, Shirley (Lawson) & Tony Adkins, David Lawson & Margaret Davis, and Trena (Lawson) Leisner. She was a loving sister to Charles Smith (deceased), Bea (Smith) & John Knicely, and Peggy (Smith) & Paul Wien. She was also a most loving grandmother to her 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Charles Orestus Smith, a retired CareFirst Medicare contractor who was an avid fan of the opera and symphony, died Jan. 3 of a heart attack at his home in the Northway Apartments in Guilford. He was 74. Born in Baltimore and raised in Guilford, Mr. Smith was a 1954 graduate of Polytechnic Institute. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Army and was sent to the Army Language School in Monterey, Calif., where he learned Russian. While serving in Japan, he met and married the former Yasuko Takagi in 1958.

The NBC station in Washington, D.C., is reporting that Charles Smith, a former basketball star at Georgetown University in the late 1980s, was shot inside his Bowie home Thursday afternoon. Smith was shot twice in the chest in the 13200 block of Lansdales Hope Way, according to the report. He was hospitalized in critical-but-stable condition and underwent surgery Thursday afternoon. Prince George's County police are searching for a single gunman, NBC News4 reported The Big East Player of the Year and a consensus All American in 1989, Smith played guard for Georgetown from 1985 to 1989.

Charles Truitt Smith, a retired computer company executive and avid collector of lead soldiers and vintage electric trains, died of a brain tumor Saturday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care in Towson. The Lutherville resident was 69. Mr. Smith was born in Baltimore and raised in Roland Park. He was a 1954 graduate of the Gilman School and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1958 from the Johns Hopkins University. He began his business career in 1958 as a salesman for National Cash Register and in 1962 took a similar position with International Business Machines.

Richard L. Smith, a retired fleet sales manager who enjoyed traveling, died of pulmonary hypertension Tuesday at his Reisterstown home. He was 86. Mr. Smith was born in Littlestown, Pa., raised in South Baltimore and graduated from Southern High School. He began his career in truck sales at Auto- Car. He went to work in 1955 for Cummins Mid-Atlantic on Washington Boulevard. Called Mr. Cummins by colleagues, he was fleet sales manager when he retired in 1982. He enjoyed traveling with family and friends and doing odd jobs around his house.

WASHINGTON - For a second straight game, the expected and the unexpected teamed up to deal the Washington Wizards a tough home loss against a Western Conference title aspirant. The San Antonio Spurs got the predictable output from Tim Duncan and Steve Smith, who combined for 42 points, but the contribution of heretofore unheralded Charles Smith burned Washington, which dropped a 96-91 decision to the Spurs at MCI Center last night, its third straight loss overall. Charles Smith, a three-year NBA veteran out of New Mexico, had a career-high 21 points, including a back-breaking three-pointer with 7:53 to start a 7-0 run that quelled a Washington rally.
