The Washington Redskins are likely to activate running back Gerald Riggs and defensive lineman Tracy Rocker from the injured-reserve list today for tomorrow's game against the Buffalo Bills.Riggs figures to replace Kelvin Bryant (knee), who is expected to go on the injured list. Rocker is likely to be needed because the Redskins have only four healthy defensive linemen. Three linemen -- Charles Mann (knee), Eric Williams (sprained arch) and Markus Koch (knee) -- didn't practice yesterday.

Gail and Keith Griffin and Charles Mann (if the names seem familiar, that's because Griffin and Mann were teammates on the Washington Redskins) were frustrated at how difficult it was to find gifts with a strong relevance to their own African-American culture and identity. So, along with a team of investors, they came up with a new mail-order venture aimed at minority consumers. The "Creative Images" catalog contains ethnic-specific wrapping paper and cards, art, books, Christmas items, clothes, toys and more.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- It didn't take long for the Buffalo Bills to get their Super Bowl wakeup call.At 7:30 yesterday morning, linebacker Carlton Bailey already was engaged in a television debate with Redskins defensive end Charles Mann. And Bailey was stunned when Mann used the "Today" show to dismiss Buffalo's defense."He said it, 'Well, you know, you guys don't have a good defense,' " Bailey was saying in the Bills' locker room yesterday. "Charles Mann said it'll be a high-scoring game [for the Redskins]

The Washington Redskins may have trouble showing much interest in tomorrow's game against the Los Angeles Rams, a troubled team that has lost six straight games. But Richie Petitbon, the assistant coach who runs the Redskins' defense, has a special reason to hope Washington (11-1) at least will put on a spiffy performance on defense in their 4 p.m. game. That's because Petitbon said yesterday he has heard the rumors going around the NFL that the Rams (3-9) are considering him as a possible head coaching candidate if John Robinson is fired at the end of this season.

Troy Aikman could miss the rest of the season with a torn collateral ligament in his right knee. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback, who suffered a separated shoulder in last year's playoff drive, "is expected to be out of action for three to four weeks," the team said.Doctors said "no surgery is recommended and a conservative course of treatment will be put into place immediately."Coach Jimmy Johnson said backup Steve Beuerlein, who led the Cowboys to their victory over Washington, will start even though he's limping with a sprained left ankle.

ASHBURN, Va. -- The fight against time, age and injury may be the toughest battle for any pro football player.Just ask running back Earnest Byner and defensive lineman Eric Williams. The Washington Redskins veterans, both 31, seem to be losing the battle in their 10th season.Born a month apart in 1962, the two joined the Redskins in trades that rejuvenated their careers, Byner in 1989 and Williams in 1990.Both started on the 1991 Super Bowl championship team, and Byner had two 1,000-yard seasons before falling just short (998)

MINNEAPOLIS -- They listened to the talk all week, and they seethed. They heard they had backed into the playoffs and didn't really deserve to be in with a 9-7 record. They heard the Minnesota Vikings wanted to play them. They waited, they plotted and they worked themselves into an emotional frenzy. Coach Joe Gibbs showed them a memorable scene from "Patton" the night before the game. Gary Clark gave an emotional speech reminding them they were the defending Super Bowl champions. Charles Mann wore his Super Bowl ring as another reminder.

ASHBURN, Va. -- What does eight minus seven equal? The answer is one frustrating season for the Washington Redskins. When the Redskins went 14-2 in the regular season last year on their way to the Super Bowl, the Redskins had eight players who were named to the Pro Bowl squad. Now that they're 9-6 and need help to make the playoffs, they had just one player -- linebacker Wilber Marshall -- who was named to this year's NFC squad yesterday. It was the first time since Joe Gibbs' first season in 1981 when kick returner Mike Nelms made it that they had only one player named.

Opening Day brought lots of excitement to Oriole Park at Camden Yards on and off the field. It seemed as if most people on the sky box level spent their time box hopping or wandering the halls to see and be seen.I heard an amusing incident happened in the box of the Orioles owner Eli Jacobs. As many people know, Mr. Jacobs considers himself a private person and prefers that guests to his box be invited. So you can imagine the excitement when a poor unsuspecting mouse was spotted creeping around Jacobs' box. Ushers were on their hands and knees trying to find it, but it seems the four-legged critter knew he wasn't welcome and took off for home.
