The Maryland Bays will be leaving Cedar Lane Park in Columbia and will play next season at the University of Maryland Baltimore County in Catonsville, the team's owner said yesterday.John F. Liparini, a Columbia-based developer who is president of the American Professional Soccer League team, said he also has met with Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke to discuss the possibility of playing some non-league games at Memorial Stadium next season."There may be some opportunity for the Bays to play some exhibition games or contests against international teams in Memorial Stadium," Liparini said.

A Columbia man who police say was wearing only a diaper when he accosted three boys in Cedar Lane Park was arrested Monday.Howard County police spokesman Sgt. Steven Keller said the boys spotted a nearly naked man, who was clutching a baby's bottle on a bike path about 3: 10 p.m., as they were heading toward the park in Columbia's Harper's Choice village.The boys later told police that the man began walking "aggressively" toward them once he saw them on the bike path."Feeling threatened and in fear, the boys instead ran away from him," Keller said.

New bocce courts have been opened at Cedar Lane Park. They were built to be used by Special Olympics Howard County for training and competition, but will also be open to the public. Life Scout Andy Byun, 15, of Mount Airy built the courts for his Eagle Scout project, with support from the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks. He is a student at Glenelg High School. Bocce, which is similar to lawn bowling, originated in Italy. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Monday at the park.

Maryland Bays owner John Liparini met with Howard County director of recreation Jeff Bourne yesterday to discuss the future playing site of the American Soccer League champion Bays.The Bays have an agreement to play their home games at Cedar Lane Park, on Route 108 in Columbia, through the 1991 season. But Liparini has expressed interest in the possible construction of a 10,000- to 15,000-seat facility at Howard Community College."We had a very cordial meeting," said Bourne. "John expressed his interests and the community college is very willing to talk about long-range plans.

An announcement of the merger between the Maryland Bays and the Washington Stars was delayed yesterday until the end of the month, but Bays owner John Liparini said the team definitely would be playing its 1991 season at Cedar Lane Park in Howard County.Liparini and Stars owner John Koskinen said the imminent merger would be announced after the American Professional Soccer League meetings ended this month in Tampa, Fla.However, since the team will be playing in Columbia, there are no more questions about the name it will play under.

Combine all the teams that participate in the World Series, Super Bowl, the NBA finals and even the Stanley Cup playoffs, and this is still bigger. The National Girls 18-and-under Fastpitch Softball Tournament even has six teams on the NCAA men's basketball tournament.Seventy teams, representing 25 states from across the country, will converge on Columbia's Cedar Lane Park and Centennial Park starting Wednesday night to participate in the five-day tournament.Tournament action continues on Thursday at 8 a.m., with games every two hours through 6 p.m. at each of Cedar Lane's four fields and Centennial's three fields.

Maryland Bays owner John Liparini said yesterday that the team is "70 percent certain" to play its American Soccer League schedule at Cedar Lane Park in Columbia next season.Liparini met yesterday with Jeff Bourne, Howard County's director of parks and recreation, and came away with a "promising outlook" for renovations to Cedar Lane Park before the 1991 season."We're asking for 500 seats to be added, we want the field to be maintained properly when we're not using it and some kind of new scoreboard installed," said Liparini.

A group of concerned Columbia residents met last night with county officials and the management staff of the Maryland Mania Soccer Team to hear details of a proposed temporary stadium in Cedar Lane Park.Maryland Mania has requested a park permit to play on Cedar Lane Park's Field 5 for one year, beginning next year. Maryland Mania representatives said the soccer season would last from April until August, with play-off games scheduled for the first or second week of September.If the permit is approved, the team would finance the conversion of the field into a 5,000-seat temporary home for the 1999 season.

Soon dozens of heads are bowed over books, brows furrowed in concentration. Pencils and erasers scratch furiouslyat photocopied sheets full of science problems.

There have been a few defensive lapses and some problems for coach Gary Hindley in keeping all his talented players happy.But nothing has prevented the Maryland Bays (17-2, 142 points) from rolling to the American Professional Soccer League Western Conference title this season.The Bays and talented forward Jean Harbor have broken several APSL records with two games still remaining in the regular season.Maryland has established regular-season league marks for most wins (17), best home record (11-0)

The Maryland Bays have figured out how to put Sunday's open date to good use.The Bays had been scheduled to play the Salt Lake Sting, but that American Professional Soccer League franchise folded last week. Instead, the Bays are inviting season ticket-holders to come and meet the players at Cedar Lane Park from 5 to 8 p.m.The Bays also announced a multi-option plan for fans who purchased tickets for Sunday's canceled game: tickets can be used for any future Bays game at Cedar Lane Park; tickets can be used for the Aug. 10 game at RFK Stadium in Washington against the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks; or ticket money will be refunded by calling the Bays' office (880-0047)

Virtual neighborhood rivals from California played each other three times yesterday before deciding the 18th Amateur Softball Association Junior Olympic Under-18 women's national fast-pitch championship.The Raiders of Santa Monica won their eighth championship in 10 years by downing the Batbusters of Orange County, 4-1, before 3,000 at Cedar Lane Park in Columbia.The Raiders -- who won seven straight national titles from 1982-88 -- took the tournament's 139th game behind the four-hit pitching of left-hander Cheryl Longeway.
