Michael Calderone Archbishop Spalding The Cavaliers won their second straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title without a real superstar and after losing three of their top six runners from last year's championship team. In his 14th season as coach at Archbishop Spalding, Calderone said he doesn't want to bank on having one big-time runner because it's a team sport. That's why the Cavaliers overcame the loss of the three runners from last year, as well as one of their top runners suffering an injury about 10 days before this year's title race.

The Westminster High football team had two goals in mind when it entered Ruby Field on Friday night: beat longtime rival South Carroll for the county title, and complete the first undefeated and untied regular season in school history. With those accomplishments now in hand, the Owls can move on to their main goal of winning the school's first state football championship. Westminster effectively mixed its running and passing games and unleashed the county's best defense in a 42-7 romp over the Cavaliers on Friday night at Ruby Field. Coach Brad Wilson's team completed the first undefeated regular season in program history, while earning its second consecutive county championship.

Albert Reid took the handoff, fended off a tackler diving at his legs, and managed to lunge forward to within a yard of the line of scrimmage before tumbling to the turf. Another Maryland running play was over before it could get started. Variations of that outcome - from the second quarter of last week's 19-14 victory over Wake Forest - have become all too common for a Maryland team that enters Saturday's game at Virginia ranked last in the Atlantic Coast Conference in rushing (86 yards per game)
