WASHINGTON -- Caron Butler was given a thunderous ovation by the fans at Verizon Center when he returned to the starting lineup last night for the Washington Wizards. It was, in retrospect, a greeting worthy of someone who had been sorely missed. Butler, whose absence because of a badly sprained right thumb coincided with the team's five-game losing streak, served as a stopper for the Wizards in a 104-92 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Not only did the win stop what had tied the team's longest losing streak of the season, but it also ended any speculation that the Wizards might miss the playoffs.

LANDOVER -- Two games into the NBA season, and it appears the Washington Bullets may need to hire a cardiologist as their team doctor. For the second night in a row the Bullets found themselves involved in a heart-stopping finish, this time coming up on the wrong end in a 98-96 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers before a sellout crowd of 17,856 at USAir Arena. It was a game the Bullets had many chances to win. When Earl Weaver's Orioles were winning or contending fo championships, he would credit his success to the "deep depth" on his roster.Cleveland coach Lenny Wilkens, who sends his Cavaliers against the Washington Bullets at the Baltimore Arena tonight, never has enjoyed that luxury until this season. In past years, if he found himself minus one or more starters, there was genuine cause for concern.Tonight, All-Star point guard Mark Price (sprained thumb) will be on the bench and small forward Mike Sanders, recovering from knee surgery, remains on the injured list.

For University of Virginia coach Jeff Jones, losses in the Atlantic Coast Conference to North Carolina, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech go with the territory. But in the 20th game of the season, with his Cavaliers trailing Clemson by eight points at the half, the third-year coach had had enough."We were struggling a bit at that point of the season, so at halftime I challenged a couple of players, essentially, to wake up," Jones said. "And they did. We won the game, and that's what really enabled us to turn the corner."

The up-and-coming Liberty Lions gave defending county champ South Carroll everything it could handle. But in the end, the Cavaliers' experience proved to be the difference as they came away with a 3-2 win at Liberty. The Cavs (2-0) enjoyed a two-goal lead most of the second half, but a late goal by Liberty's Haley DeLaurence made things interesting as the Lions pressed for the tying goal in the final two minutes before coming up short."Liberty's young kids had every right to quit and never did," said South Carroll coach Jim Horn.

Only 42 seconds remained at Westminster last night before the South Carroll Cavaliers were able to remove their starters, something that has become more and more common of late this season. It could almost be considered a compliment to a very good Owls team that did all it could last night to disrupt the Cavaliers. The No. 6 Cavaliers had too many weapons and all the right answers in their 71-58 win over a Westminster team that was coming off a big win against Linganore on Tuesday. It was the 19th straight win for the Cavs, who haven't lost since their opener against No. 2 Hammond on Dec. 5.Nicole Spencer (18 points)
