LUSBY - Annapolis had chances, but it was its inability to stop Patuxent running back Terry Cauley that led to a 29-17 loss in the first round of the Class 3A football playoffs. Cauley gained 304 yards on 25 carries, including 189 in the third quarter, when Patuxent opened up a 19-7 lead. Cauley scored on a 49-yard run on the second play of the second half. After a 2-yard Eric Venerable touchdown run had narrowed the Patuxent lead to 13-7, Cauley went 76 yards on the first play from scrimmage.

Dr. James W. McCauley was sworn in July 1 at the Harford County courthouse as a new member of the Harford Community College Board of Trustees, serving as representative for county council District F. The HCC board also announced the re-election of Dr. James J. Valdes as chairman and Richard D. Norling as vice chairman. McCauley, a Havre de Grace resident, earned a B.S. in geology from St. Joseph's College in Indiana and an M.S. in mineralogy and Ph.D. in solid state science (crystallography)

Residents of a small community in Olney are mourning the deaths of two neighbors who were killed in the Swissair Flight 111 crash that claimed the lives of 229 people off Nova Scotia Wednesday.Mark J. Chapman, a 42-year-old engineer, and his wife, Cauley H. Chapman, a 34-year-old flight attendant for American Airlines, were killed on the flight while traveling to Greece to visit Mark Chapman's parents. Their deaths rippled through the 10-home cul-de-sac in Olney where they had lived for about four years.

Dr. H. Berton McCauley, former chief of the dental division of the Baltimore Health Department, who led the controversial battle that resulted in the city's water supply being fluoridated nearly 60 years ago, died Oct. 23 of prostate cancer at his Hadley Square home. He was 98. "He made the biggest public health impact with the fluoridation of Baltimore's drinking water. And think of all the kids it benefited," said Christian S. Stohler, dean of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.

Bambi Lynn "Bam-Bam" McCauley, a longtime bartender, died of breast cancer March 20 at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. She was 47. Ms. McCauley was born in Peoria, Ill., the daughter of a Navy test pilot. She spent her early years on several military bases before moving to Columbia with her family. She was a 1977 graduate of Wilde Lake High School and earned a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1982. Ms. McCauley worked in computer sales before becoming a bartender.
