Crime is down 9 percent this year, city police tell us. The mayor says we're seeing "extraordinary results" and attributes the drop to her plan to target violent criminals. Meanwhile, people are being attacked in and around downtown, from Mount Vernon to Federal Hill, and five people have been killed this week, including a man shot near the baseball stadium shortly after the bars and clubs had closed. Cops say they're beefing up patrols at the Inner Harbor and neighboring communities, and people say they're scared.

OF COURSE Aaron Copland was the son of immigrants; that explains why his music was so American. Was it more classical or popular? The sound obliterates such categories; its love, gratitude, and sheer recognition of what lies all about us overflows all classifications except American. His is the music of discovery presented with calculation. This composer was in love with the simple things about America -- cowboy tunes, folk songs, Lincoln -- that are not so simple at all, any more than he was. He didn't just use American themes in his music but created them anew for future generations.

The art of landscape is by definition poetic and symbolical. We respond to pictures of field and forest, mountain and sea because the varied moods of nature somehow seem to echo our innermost thoughts and feelings. Landscape as metaphor is a recurring motif in Terra Incognito/Terra Cognito, an exhibition of recent works by painter Ruth Pettus and photographer Michela Caudill at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. Pettus' atmospheric ink drawings and Caudill's spare, black-and-white photographs are mounted on opposing walls, where they activate a subtle visual dialog between the two media.
