I am a person that seldom drives more than five miles per hour over the posted speed limit, whether it be on an interstate highway or a city street. In my 60-plus years of driving, I have received three speeding citations, averaging one every 20 years. This past May, I was mailed a speed camera ticket from Baltimore City for exceeding by more than 12 miles per hour the 25 mph speed limit on Gwynns Falls Parkway. I found this a little hard to believe. However, after recovering from the shock, I dutifully and promptly paid the $40 fine while also feeling that I had lost my virginity.

Traffic was backed up for three and a half miles on southbound I-95 near Washington Boulevard early Monday afternoon, due to a multi-vehicle collision that temporarily left a BMW dangling over the guardrail of an overpass on I-95. As of 2 p.m., the backup was less than two miles long, as cleanup efforts were underway. One of four southbound traffic lanes on I-95 was closed and one of two shoulders was closed. As of about 5:30 p.m. the expected traffic congestion from the influx of U2 fans to M&T Bank Stadium wasn't looking too bad, according to the Baltimore Department of Transportation. " Some 75,000-80,000 people are expected to attend the 7 p.m. concert. UPDATE: At 5:50 p.m., Chopper reported that traffic was backed up on Lombard Street between President and Light.

Pete Landon knows only too well what happens when a motorist isn't paying attention in a highway work zone. So does the college student who was tailgating him while texting. The two vehicles had a near-miss Tuesday morning on the Beltway near Liberty Road, said Landon, who watched the scene in his rearview mirror — and who stopped the other driver and gave her a warning. "We were both lucky. If she had hit me, I probably would have hit the car in front of me," said Landon, a State Police lieutenant colonel on his way to a news conference about highway safety.

When Variety Auto Brokers closed its doors last month, one guy lost his business of 30 years. Five employees lost their jobs. And all of Southwest Baltimore lost a beacon of both political discourse and check-bouncing shame. The Caton Avenue used-car lot had a big light-up sign that owner Mark Richards turned into a soapbox to comment on world events ("Let 'em have it, George," as the war in Iraq was launched) and local politics ("Dixon and O'Malley - Bonnie and Clyde.") The sign also served as a modern-day scarlet letter for writers of rubber checks.

Commuters are adjusting to a sort of wartime traffic flow in the name of homeland security, measures that are snarling traffic at truck inspection points and near the makeshift buttress of concrete barriers and dump trucks parked on Interstate 83 yesterday to protect Baltimore's Emergency Operations Center. Overhead interstate highway signs throughout the state warned drivers of the "Heightened state of Homeland Security," and a swarm of police officers made random checks on thousands of trucks and tractor-trailers before allowing them to pass through tunnels or cross major bridges.
