You may have thought from reading past posts that it is only Nicholas Kristof and Thomas Friedman for whom The New York Times  has abandoned editing. Not so. There is evidence of a slack rein on the regular staff as well.  I place in evidence this paragraph published in The Times  earlier this week: The Fort Lee traffic jam scandal has unleashed a wintry mix of subpoenas, tortured apologies and fresh allegations against Mr. Christie, a Republican, and potentially put a deep freeze on his presidential chances.

Oct. 30, 1997, was a long work day for Cassandra Veney. So she wasn't thrilled when a friend urged her to go to a lecture and dinner that evening at the Center for African Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.An assistant professor of political science at Illinois State University, Cassandra -- who specializes in African issues -- also had an early class to teach the next morning on the Normal, Ill., campus. The last thing she wanted to do was drive an hour to the event and then face the hour drive home to Bloomington, Ill. -- though she was sure the evening would be illuminating.

Kacie Bawiec has been scribbling stories in notebooks since she was in the third grade. And just two weeks ago, the 15-year-old teenager published her first novel, "Silver Dagger. " The fantasy manuscript, which Kacie wrote when she was in the eighth grade, was picked up last year by Tate Publishing, a small, family-owned Christian-based publishing house that specializes in emerging authors. In its 198 pages, "Silver Dagger" is full of evil spirits, ghostly possession and magical weapons, such as the eponymous blade with its jewel-encrusted hilt, which materializes when Bawiec's characters are enraged.

As a New York-based actress, Sarah Beth Pfeifer begins her mornings surfing the Internet to decide which auditions to attend. Recently, one caught her eye: a bus tour production about a girl who overcomes peer pressure and bullying to realize her dreams. The Mount Hebron High School graduate, who grew up in Ellicott City, landed several parts in the production, "Cassandra's Angel," which is now on a 20-city, 20-week nationwide tour that includes schools and other venues in the Baltimore-Washington area this month.

Is Rick Santorum running for president of the United States, or isn't he? I caught him by phone on a people mover at Dulles Airport and posed the question: He's not running; then again, he's not not running. En route to South Carolina on Tuesday to stump for gubernatorial candidate and Republican Rep. Gresham Barrett, Mr. Santorum wasn't being cagey, just practical. Whether the former Pennsylvania senator can raise the millions needed for a presidential bid remains to be seen.

Perhaps the most daring jazz vocalist of her generation, Cassandra Wilson often pushes her music in thrilling, richly evocative directions. The dark and loamy feel of the blues usually anchors her sound. Be it a Hank Williams ballad, a pop ditty by the Monkees or an introspective self-penned tune, Wilson adds sensuous, haunting textures and dimensions to any song. On Loverly, her latest CD released in June, the Grammy winner revisits the American Songbook. Excluding Rendezvous, her 1997 duet album with pianist Jacky Terrasson, Loverly is Wilson's first exploration of standards as a leader in 20 years.
