Steven Hicks was a unanimous choice as MVP in yesterday's 67-53 Carver win over Edmondson for the MSA B Conference championship. But no shot he has taken in a basketball game has been as critical as the one he took in the back on May 28, 1989, over a pickup basketball game. That one was a .32-caliber. It entered his lower back just to the right of his spine, collapsed his lungs and damaged his kidney and liver. Eight days later he went home from the hospital with a 14-inch scar up his midsection and a month later the bullet was removed from his right chest.

Stephen Kimes Carver The Carver boys track and field team hadn't won much in its history. But Stephen Kimes quickly changed that, turning the Bears into a championship team. In just his second indoor season, Kimes led Carver to an impressive sweep of the Baltimore City, regional and Class 1A state championships. These were the team's first city and state crowns, and what's believed to be the first regional title as well. All-Metro pick Jawan Parker was solid in the sprints and relay, but Carver scored points all across the board.

Baltimore got its first taste of Howard County volleyball yesterday, and it was not pleasant.Until last night, Carver had enjoyed a fine season. The Bears went 11-3 during the regular season. And in the first year of Baltimore's athletic merger with the state, that was good enough for fourth seed in the Class 3A, Region III playoffs. Then the Bears came to Centennial to play the top-ranked, top-seeded, undefeated, defending state champion Eagles. The Bears, outclassed from the start, could not manage a point, or even an offensive rally.
