Sophomore Ben McCarty has started in the midfield for Towson in the past two games, and coach Shawn Nadelen confirmed that the South Carroll graduate will open Wednesday's Colonial Athletic Association semifinal at No. 17 Drexel with junior midfielders Justin Mabus and Greg Cuccinello. Nadelen said the coaches bumped McCarty up to the first line and moved freshman Ryan Drenner (Westminster) down to the second unit to give the offense more options. McCarty has scored one goal on seven shots in his two starts, while Drenner has scored two goals on four shots.

It was easy to spot John Carty among the 142 graduates at the University of Maryland School of Medicine's commencement on Friday: With his weathered, stoic look and a beard that covers much of his face, Carty was the one who could easily be mistaken for a member of faculty. Or for what he until recently was: a farmer. "Farmers have taught me a lot in my life," Robert D. Pugatch, a medical school professor, said during the ceremonies, "but I had never taught a farmer." The professor paused for a moment and smiled, a show of respect for Carty's former line of work, one that requires delayed gratification and painstaking efforts with no end in sight.

In meeting No. 13 Loyola on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore, No. 18 Towson will play its third game of the season without midfielders Andrew Hodgson and Ben McCarty. Hodgson, a senior, and McCarty, a sophomore, have been sidelined by undisclosed injuries, and coach Shawn Nadelen said it was too much to expect the duo to return for a midweek contest after the Tigers lost, 15-8, to No. 12 Johns Hopkins on Saturday. “I think with the quick turnaround, it's tough on those guys getting ready with three games within seven days,” Nadelen said Monday.

As expected, No. 18 Towson opened the season Saturday against High Point without senior midfielder Andrew Hodgson. The team played without another midfielder in sophomore Ben McCarty. McCarty, a South Carroll graduate who had 13 goals and five assists last season, is considered day to day and is a question mark for Saturday's game at No. 13 Johns Hopkins. Coach Shawn Nadelen said McCarty is on track to practice Wednesday. “I just got a report today saying that things look promising for him,” Nadelen said Tuesday afternoon.

The six-goal explosion by redshirt freshman midfielder Ben McCarty that powered Towson's 11-8 upset of No. 15 Drexel in Wednesday's Colonial Athletic Association tournament semifinal must have shocked the Dragons, who probably did not expect McCarty to match his season total in goals in one contest. Even McCarty's coach, Shawn Nadelen, said he did not envision that performance. “I can't say I anticipated that,” Nadelen said with a chuckle Thursday morning. “I'm excited for him to do that.

That is in addition to $4.

A year ago, Century spoiled South Carroll's bid for a 5-0 start. This time around, Cavaliers senior Ben McCarty all but made certain history wouldn't repeat itself. In the span of 12 seconds midway through the third quarter, McCarty recovered a Century fumble deep in South Carroll's end, then rushed for a 73-yard touchdown, leading the visiting Cavaliers to a 21-13 win against their Carroll County rival. "It was definitely right in front of our heads," McCarty said, referring to last year's game.
