Sara Carter and Erin Causey met during their freshman year at Hereford. The two girls discovered they had a number of similarities and eventually became best friends. Both girls loved running, and they were very good, especially in cross country. Carter finished second in the Class 3A state championship race last year while Causey was fifth as Hereford dominated the rest of field to win a second consecutive team title. Now juniors, Carter and Causey are team captains this season as they aim to bring a third straight state championship to the Baltimore County school.

What happened to Chavis Carter? It is a pregnant question, potentially even an explosive one. Carter died of a gunshot wound to the temple on the last Saturday in July, but the question about his death has only grown louder and more urgent since then. It is beginning to gather national attention. So we need an answer soon, either so that suspicions can be put to rest and some imperfect peace achieved, or so that suspicions can be validated and some equally imperfect justice sought.

The Roger Carter Seals sent 18 swimmers to the Bel Air Swim and Racquet Club July 28 to compete in the Prince-Mont Swim League All Stars meet. To qualify, swimmers either had to win the final heat at Divisionals or post one of the top 18 times in a stroke or relay during league competition. The Prince-Mont Swim League contains eight divisions with 40 teams. Seal swimmers who qualified were Jocelyn Choo, Ethan Doan, Mason Doan, Tien Doan, Hannah Green, Zach Grissom, Kevin Hu, Shannon Hochkeppel, Troy Hochkeppel, Anand Iyer, Andrew Li, Anna Li, Maria Liu, Katherine Joseph, Dillon Phamdo, Trueman Phamdo, Jeffrey Tse, Ashley Wong, Joseph Wong, Emily Xu, Hannah Zhang and Sarah Zhang.

A third person has been arrested in connection with the mid-March videotaped beating of a man in downtown Baltimore, police said. Deangelo Carter, 18, of Baltimore, was taken into custody Tuesday in Northeast Baltimore, said Detective Jeremy Silbert, a spokesman for the Baltimore Police Department. Carter has been charged with first-degree assault, he said. Police are still looking for a fourth person — Shatia Baldwin, 21, of Baltimore — who they say took part in the assault on a man from Alexandria, Va. Baldwin is named in a warrant that charges her with assault and robbery.

Michael Penny Carter, a longtime public schools and community activist who had been director of family and community engagement for the Baltimore school system, died Tuesday of prostate cancer at a sister's home in West Baltimore. The Harlem Park resident was 63. "Michael's death is both a personal and professional loss. He meant a great deal to me," said Baltimore schools CEO Andrés Alonso. "He was a great man who cared so much about neighborhoods and schools, and he brought his own vision to his work.

This week's leading literary adaptation is "John Carter," a movie crafted from a sci-fi tale by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author who also brought us Tarzan. Chicago-born Burroughs (1875-1950) scraped by in various careers until 1910, when he began writing for pulp magazines. According to a bio in The Free Library: A story called Under the Moons of Mars , which introduced the hero John Carter, was his first sale and was published in 1912. Many more Carter adventures followed including as "The Gods of Mars.

The Hereford girls have won six straight Baltimore County indoor track and field championships and regional titles three of the past four winters. But the Bulls had never captured a state title. The No. 3 Bulls ended that drought Tuesday night when they outlasted Milford Mill to win the first indoor state title in school history. The Bulls scored 65 points to beat the Millers (54) and win the Class 3A championship at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. "This has been our goal all season," Hereford coach Brad Duvall said.
