Craig Swanson becomes full-time faculty member Craig R. Swanson, a former adjunct instructor at Carroll Community College, has been appointed a full-time faculty member in the Division of Mathematics, Sciences, Health and Wellness. He has more than 30 years of experience, primarily as a science teacher. Between 2001 and 2004, he taught biology, anatomy/physiology and environmental science part time at Carroll. Before that, he worked in the upper school at Gilman in Baltimore for 14 years, teaching chemistry, physics, biology, anatomy/physiology and ecology.

Students at Carroll Community College now can complete undergraduate business degrees without leaving the Westminster campus. A new partnership between Carroll Community College and Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg makes a four-year degree possible at the community college. The partnership, which started in June, offers upper-level business courses taught by Mount St. Mary's professors on the Westminster campus. Kristine DeWitt, senior director of student development for Carroll Community College, said students at the school traditionally head to University of Baltimore or to Towson University to complete their degrees.

The League of Women Voters of Carroll County will have a preprimary candidate forum Thursday to offer the public a chance to meet the candidates and hear their positions on issues.The forum will be held in the Great Hall of Carroll Community College, 1601 Washington Road, Westminster. Carroll County Board of Education candidates will speak from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., followed by candidates for the District 5 House of Delegates race at 8:40 p.m.Candidates for other offices are welcome to attend and display their literature.

A major hurdle to the construction of a new nursing and allied health building at Carroll Community College was lifted Monday night when the General Assembly approved amendments to the state construction budget that included $2.7 million in funding for the building. When the governor announced his capital budget for fiscal 2003, the building was excluded. Carroll Sen. Larry E. Haines, Carroll Community College President Faye Pappalardo and county agencies lobbied legislators to reinstate bond projects such as this in amendments to the bill.

A committee of the Maryland Higher Education Commission has recommended allowing Carroll Community College to become independent.The full commission is expected to act on the recommendation when it meets Wednesday, said Rosemary Straub, CCC's coordinator of community relations.The college has been a branch campus of Catonsville Community College. Last summer, it began to accelerate plans for independence, based on a recommendation by Shaila R. Aery, state secretary of higher education.The Education Policy Committee of the Higher Education Commission met yesterday and approved independence for Carroll.

Free CPR course available for adults Carroll Hospital Center has partnered with Carroll Community College and the Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association to offer a free family and friends CPR course for adults. This new streamlined course includes recently revised American Heart Association guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation training. "CPR Across Carroll County" will be offered to adults from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the following locations: Carroll Hospital Center, 410-848-2244; Carroll Community College, 410-386-8100; Mount Airy volunteer, Sykesville-Freedom and Taneytown volunteer fire departments, 410-848-1488, ext. 206. Carroll Community College plans to end its contract as a branch of Catonsville Community College effective June 30, 1997.The county commissioners will be sending a letter Baltimore County-based Catonsville officials, informing them of the plan, which has been in the preparation stage for several months. But the schools plan to maintain some affiliation.Wednesday, the Carroll Community College Advisory Board unanimously endorsed the letter from the commissioners.In other action Wednesday night, the board approved creation of the Carroll Community College Medal.

As a result of an academic reorganization, two new dean positions have been created at Carroll Community College. The new dean of arts, letters and social sciences is Steven Geppi. He was previously chair of the Division of Social Sciences and Legal Studies. The new dean of business, mathematics and sciences is Judith Coen. Previously, she was dean of mathematics, sciences, health and wellness. Other academic promotions include: Craig Swanson, Michael Stovall, promoted from instructor to assistant professor; Robert Brown, Donald Hoepfer, promoted from assistant professor to associate professor; Kate Demarest, promoted from associate professor to professor.

CCC is host of conferenceMore than 100 members of the Maryland Association of Higher Education will attend a spring conference at Carroll Community College today.The association includes faculty and staff from all the two- and four-year colleges and universities in the state, both public and private.Members hold a fall meeting in Baltimore every year and move the spring conference around to different schools.Carroll Community College Executive Dean Joseph F. Shields and another Carroll staff member will be honored at the conference today.

CCC appoints faculty memberCarroll Community College recently announced the appointment of Gwen Myers to the faculty. She will teach courses in growth and development in early childhood education and general psychology and human development.A native of Lottie, Ala., she received a bachelor's degree in child development and a master's degree in early childhood education from Auburn University. She earned her doctorate at the University of Texas.She lives in Catonsville with her husband, Scott, and two children, Nicholas, 9, and Olivia, 6.Teachers honored for drug abuse classSome 115 public school teachers, counselors and health assistants participated in Carroll Community College's 30-hour training program at the Institute for Drug and Alcohol Abuse Education over the summer.
