Vandals damaged several doors of carnival concession buildings belonging to the New Windsor Volunteer Fire Department sometime after Dec. 30, the company reported.Officials of the department, located on High Street, told state police that the doors of three concession buildings at the carnival grounds on Atlee Avenue and Water Street were kicked open.Damage to the interior wood jambs on three of the doors, which was discovered last week, was estimated at $300.FireTaneytown: Firefighters from Taneytown, Harney, Union Bridge, Emmitsburg and Kingsdale and Littlestown, Pa., responded to smoke in a townhouse in the first block of Grand Drive at 3: 52 p.m. Monday.

IT'S NOT EVERY day that a mayor slides down a sliding board while residents applaud. But that's what happened Tuesday night when the new tot lot at Union Bridge Community Center was dedicated to the town by Union Bridge Lions Club.Mayor Perry Jones was the first to test the playground equipment the Lions and other residents had been working on for a year.The Lions spearheaded the project, Carroll County's Department Recreation and Parks helped pay for it and residents and businesses helped put the project together.

SUMMER wouldn't be complete without a carnival. With rides, bingo, live music, and of course, sticky caramel apples and cotton candy, carnivals offer something for everyone, young and old.It seems as if the whole community turns out for at least one evening at the local carnival. It's kind of the thing to do during the dog days of summer, and a perfect chance to run into friends you haven't seen since hot weather set in.Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Firemen's Carnival Monday through July 27 at the Fire Company Carnival grounds, Route 27 and Twin Arch Road, Mount Airy.

Carnival season in Carroll County has gotten off to a wet start, but organizers are hoping for better weather.The Gamber firemen's carnival was rained out Monday, and the Union Bridge fire company's carnival had only a few food and game stands open for what should have been a grand opening to the season.If the sky clears, volunteers will set off Gamber's fireworks extravaganza by the Great Zambelli today. Twenty rides will be available to choose from.Entertainment at Gamber includes Baktraxx today, the Sentries tomorrow, Stillwater on Friday, and Maria Rose and the Blue Horizon Band on Saturday.

Two of the major kickoffs of the fall season are scheduled in the coming weeks in northwest Carroll.The 23rd annual Taneytown Flea Market will be at the Taneytown Fireman's Carnival Grounds starting at 8 a.m. Saturday. For the earliest birds, a pancake breakfast will be served beginning at 5 a.m. in the carnival grounds' activities building. The breakfast lasts until 11 a.m.; the flea market closes at 5 p.m.Eighty-two vendors have signed up to show their wares, and spaces still are available.

Mount Airy resident Mary Henley has found that sowing the seeds of spiritual nourishment by operating a Christian bookstore reaps benefits that can't be measured in dollars and cents alone.Mrs. Henley and her husband, Dennis, own The Lord's Work Inc. at 106 E. Ridgeville Blvd. in Mount Airy. Since the store opened in February, Mrs. Henley said, customers have come in search of books for comfort, tools for instruction and gifts for celebrations or remembrances.From a mother grieving the death of a young son to an enthusiastic truck driver ready to hold a prayer meeting in the cozy store, Mrs. Henley has provided a variety of religious items.

When it opens at 7 p.m. tomorrow for this season, Shaw & Sons Amusements will operate its rides for the 50th consecutive year. Some things simply endure -- and get better."The Glen Burnie carnival is my favorite carnival," says Ralph E. Shaw, the company's current proprietor. "The people are so nice, and it's a family atmosphere. There's never any hassle . . . People come to have a good time, and that's what they do."

A 1,000-gallon propane gas tank at the Mount Airy Carnival Grounds apparently was punctured by a bullet early yesterday, prompting the evacuation of about 20 carnival workers and the closing of Route 27 for about 3 1/2 hours.State police said the shot possibly was fired by someone in a passing automobile or in woods near the carnival grounds, at Route 27 and Twin Arch Road.The tank rupture was reported at 3:58 a.m. to the Carroll County Emergency Operations Center. But it was unclear who called, officials said.
