With Wilber Marshall awaiting designation, the Washington Redskins introduced his probable successor at strong-side linebacker yesterday: Carl Banks, an old nemesis from their rivalry with the New York Giants.Banks, a former Pro Bowl player who became an unrestricted free agent last Thursday, agreed to a multi-year contract with the Redskins late Sunday night. A source said the deal was worth $1.8 million a year for three years.Banks became available in a curious shuffle last week. The Giants originally named him their transition player, only to rescind the title when they signed outside linebacker Michael Brooks to a contract worth $1.8 million a year.

The 1990s will be a pivotal time for the Cleveland Browns franchise, especially since the team has decided to relocate in Baltimore.The Browns suffered their worst season in franchise history in 1990, finishing 3-13. Browns coach Bud Carson didn't make it through his second full season, being replaced by interim head coach Jim Shofner on Nov. 5.Three months later, Browns owner Art Modell named Bill Belichick as his new coach."The Browns were in a tough position then," said Belichick. "They had a lot of older players who had been to the playoffs and a few good young ones, but not the core of veterans that are so important to championship teams."

Linebacker Carl Banks, who started the first 13 games of the season, became the latest victim of the Washington Redskins' injury jinx when he was placed on the inactive list for tomorrow's game against the Atlanta Falcons with a groin injury.Banks will be replaced by Monte Coleman.Only three defensive players -- cornerback Darrell Green, linebacker Kurt Gouveia and safety Brad Edwards -- have started every game.Offensive lineman Paul Siever, safety Darryl Morrison and tight end Terry Orr also were placed on the inactive list.

Defensive lineman Charles Mann will be the next Washington Redskins veteran to be a victim of the salary cap.According to a team source, the Redskins plan to waive Mann, who is due to make $1.6 million this year, to give them more room under the salary cap as they attempt to sign a pair of free agents -- center John Gesek of the Dallas Cowboys and defensive lineman Reuben Davis of the Phoenix Cardinals.Mann, an 11-year veteran who was limited to action in 12 games because of knee problems, will be the fourth veteran to depart as the Redskins reduce their payroll because of the cap.The first three were linebacker Carl Banks and wide receiver Tim McGee, who were waived, and center Jeff Bostic, who retired.

There's a virtual revolving door at Redskin Park these days.After waiving linebacker Carl Banks yesterday in the wake of coming to terms with Ken Harvey on Saturday, the Washington Redskins moved close to signing two more free agents -- tight end Ethan Horton of the Los Angeles Raiders and center John Gesek of the Dallas Cowboys.Team sources said the Redskins think they can sign Horton and Gesek, who both visited last week, to bolster their offense.They also scheduled visits from four free agents the next two days.
