BOSTON -- Paul Carey wove a classi hometown-boy-makes-good story yesterday, but he would have preferred it had taken place at Boston Garden, not Fenway Park.Growing up in Weymouth, Mass., Carey wanted to play in the NHL, specifically for the Boston Bruins. But he turned down a chance to play hockey and baseball at Harvard to attend Stanford.Carey, 25, wasn't the first person to fall in love with California weather. Still, who knew that decision would affect not only his career choice, but that of another future Oriole as well?

LANDOVER -- If the Washington Capitals keep this up, they may have to worry about how to make ice at USAir Arena in May and June. They faced the winningest team in the NHL last night with an injury-driven lineup -- and won, 6-4, over the Quebec Nordiques. To do it, they used a two-goal performance by Peter Bondra, who has 14 goals this month, and a hard-working defense."We knew what to expect," said Quebec leading scorer Joe Sakic, who was shut out last night and on the ice for every Capitals goal.

LANDOVER -- Maybe 20 year-old goaltender Jim Carey is the spark the Washington Capitals have been seeking all season.Carey was little short of sensational last night, making one incredible save after another to lead the Capitals to a 5-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at the USAir Arena.Carey seemingly used almost all the parts of his body to turn back Montreal, sprawling across the ice to knock away a promising series of shots. With Carey doing the job in the goal, the scoring seemed to come easier for a struggling Washington team that has finally won two games in a row for the first time this season.
