A water main break yesterday sent muddy water bubbling into the streets of Overlea, while a leaking gas line and two furnace fires prompted residents to scurry from their homes. No one was injured, but at least 210 homes and 13 businesses lost water as authorities shut off the water main for repairs, said a city public works spokesman. The spokesman, Kurt L. Kocher, said water service had been restored about 8:30 p.m. Gas was also shut off in at least 400 homes, according to the Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. Officials were searching for the cause of the breaks in the water and gas lines.

Halfway through our meal at Cardwell's Tavern, our server told us the next round of drinks would be on the house. As co-owner Craig Nachodsky later explained: "When I see someone who hasn't been in before, I like to buy them a round of drinks because I think it's nice. I like to make people feel at home." With its dark interior dominated by a large bar, Cardwell's looks like many other neighborhood watering holes. Decorations are mainly Guinness posters and signs announcing the next open-mike night.

Natural gas service had been restored yesterday to about 1,300 of the nearly 2,000 homes and businesses in Overlea affected by dual water and gas main breaks Saturday, Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. reported. But about 200 of those buildings had sustained enough water damage in their gas lines to require the service of a private contractor, BGE officials said, meaning the gas could not be turned on for those customers. The problems began Saturday when 6-inch water and gas mains buried together under Belair Road and Cardwell Avenue burst, and water infiltrated the gas system.

After one year of mourning the neighborhood grocery store that went out of business and pestering Annapolis officials to help find a replacement, Eastport residents are finally getting a new food market in the community's shopping center. The new store is a symbolic victory for residents of a city that has gradually lost supermarkets and drugstores to the suburbs. Although the Eastport Shopping Center is in semisuburbia, the store remained empty for a year after Thriftway closed in December 1997 because, at 18,000 square feet, it wasn't big enough for most grocery chains.
