A young Howard County woman was killed yesterday afternoon when the car she was driving was struck by a tractor-trailer on U.S. 1 in Jessup, county police said. Holly Atkins, 18, of the 8300 block of Granville Road in Jessup was driving a 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix east on Lincoln Drive near the community of Cedars about 4:40 p.m. and halted for a stop sign at the intersection with the 8000 block of Washington Blvd. (U.S. 1), police said. Atkins then entered the boulevard and was attempting to turn north when a southbound 1996 International tractor-trailer struck the driver's side of the car, police said.

Anne Arundel County police say a 20-year-old Severn woman has been charged with negligent manslaughter by motor vehicle after cell phone records indicate she was using her cell phone when the car she was driving struck a motorcycle, killing the driver. Jonathan Wesley Roberts, 30, of Virginia, died in the accident, which occurred in March 10 in Gambrills. Police said Elizabeth Haley Meyers, was attempting to cross northbound Route 3 when the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt she was driving traveled into the path of a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle, driven by Roberts in the left lane.

POLICE LOG* Marriottsville: A thief fled after attempting to steal a 1993 Pontiac in the 12000 block of Mettee Road on Feb. 22 or Feb. 23 when the car struck a tree at the end of the owner's driveway. Police said the owner had left the keys in the vehicle.

Baltimore County Police say a woman was killed Saturday in a single car crash in the Cockeysville area. According to police, at 1:20p.m., Nov. 10, police and fire personnel responded to the area of Padonia Road and Beaver Dam Road for a report of an accident involving injuries.  When officers arrived, they discovered a Honda had run into a light support pole at Beaver Dam Road and Texas Station Court. Police said they believe the car, which was driven by a woman in her 60s, was traveling southbound on Beaver Dam Road approaching Texas Station Court when the car was struck by a deer.  The Honda then struck a light support pole.  The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.  She was later identified by police as Suzanne Natalie Selby, 62, of Lutherville.

A Baltimore City Circuit Court judge held a hearing yesterday on a request for a new trial for Leonard Cirincione, whose car struck and killed a 55-year-old Baltimore police officer 10 years ago.Cirincione, 39, who was sentenced to life in prison for the first-degree murder of Officer Richard Miller, did not testify yesterday. But his attorney, Richard M. Karceski, argued that the state had failed to bring up important testimony from several psychiatrists who had evaluated Cirincione. He said the state didn't call the doctors because they knew the evidence was "a minefield that they didn't want to walk through."

A 17-year-old Ellicott City girl was seriously injured Saturday when her car struck another car driving toward her, Howard County police said.Angela Holtman was flown by state police MedEvac helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she was in fair and stable condition yesterday with head, abdomen, chest and spinal injuries.Police said Ms. Holtman was driving her 1991 Ford Escort east in the 4300 block of Montgomery Road at 5:25 p.m. Saturday, at times switching lanes on the two-lane road.

A driver was found dead in his wrecked car yesterday evening on a grassy embankment off Route 32 near Liberty Reservoir. A pedestrian noticed the crumpled 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier about 5:45 p.m. and called police, said Cpl. Charles Hahn of Westminster barracks. The driver was identified as Michael Vahaly, 43, of the 2100 block of Bollinger Mill Road in Finksburg. Police said he suffered multiple injuries. Police said the driver may have been speeding south on Route 32 when the car struck a guardrail and tree and then tumbled down the embankment near Miners Ridge Drive.

A 76-year-old Elkridge man died yesterday when his car struck a tree and went over an embankment in Columbia, Howard County police said. The sole occupant of the car, George Norman Andrews of the 6800 block of Old Waterloo Road, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was traveling east on Little Patuxent Parkway, between Harpers Farm Road and Banneker Road, at 9:25 a.m. when the accident occurred. Police said a preliminary investigation indicates that Andrews' 1997 silver Cadillac DeVille apparently veered to the left.

A 20-year-old Calvert County woman was killed yesterday afternoon when her car crashed into a tree after sliding down an embankment in Pindell, Anne Arundel County police said.Carrie Rene Harbaugh of the 300 block of Sun Park Lane in Huntingtown was pronounced dead at Prince George's Hospital Center shortly after the 4 p.m. accident.Police said Ms. Harbaugh was driving southbound on Southern Maryland Boulevard near Upper Pindell Road, in the southern end of the county, when she lost control of her 1991 Ford Escort and went down the embankment.

State police said excessive speed was a factor in two single-car accidents early yesterday in Wicomico County that claimed three lives. Jason Elmer Williams, 27, of Tyaskin was driving north about 1:30 a.m. when his 1997 Ford pickup truck ran off rural Clara Road and struck a telephone pole. Williams, who was not wearing his seat belt, suffered head injuries and died en route to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. About 2:30 a.m., Stephanie Lynn Horne, 31, of Willards was driving north on Green Branch Road when she lost control of her 1974 Mercedes.

An 81-year-old Baltimore woman died Sunday afternoon after being involved in a car accident in Anne Arundel County, police said. Catherine Mary Guthrie, of the 1700 block of South Hanover Street in South Baltimore, was pronounced dead at Maryland Shock Trauma Center after the 2006 Pontiac G6 she was a passenger in struck a tree in Pasadena about 1:15 p.m., police said. An initial investigation showed the vehicle, being driven by Gloria Ann Guthrie, 47, of the same South Baltimore address, was traveling east in the 7400 block of Fort Smallwood Road when it "left the roadway for unknown reasons," police said.

A 66-year-old Prince George's County man was killed in a multiple-vehicle crash Monday along Route 100 near Quarterfield Road in Pasadena. John Frederick Cornelius of Fort Washington died at University of Maryland Shock Trauma, where he was taken shortly after the 7:12 p.m. accident. Speed and aggressive driving on the part of Zachary Adam Covington, 25, of Springfield, Va., were contributing factors in the crash, investigators said. Charges have not been filed. Covington, who was driving a BMW, had cut off several vehicles as he merged onto the highway, police said.

A Columbia man died five days after his car hit a tree on Little Patuxent Parkway, police said Friday. James Dennis Ellis Jr., 72, died Thursday at University of Maryland Hospital, police said, from injuries he sustained when his car hit a tree near The Mall in Columbia just before 10 p.m. Saturday. The roads were wet from the wintry weather and police said Ellis was speeding. Ellis had not been wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to officers. Police said that this is the 10th fatal crash in Howard County in 2011.

Republican convention to hear Steele Former Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele has received a featured speaking role at his second consecutive presidential nominating convention, the Republican National Committee announced yesterday. Steele is scheduled to speak Sept. 2 on the second night of the convention in St. Paul, Minn. Among the others speaking that evening on the theme of "reform" are three former presidential hopefuls: former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee.

Eighteen-year-old Evan J. Weichert hollered to his father, "I'm going out!" as he left his Port Deposit home to visit his older sister in North East. He was accompanied on the 13-mile trip through Cecil County by two friends, Christopher Ryan Lepore of Perryville and Randi Inez Taylor of Colora. Four hours later, as they returned, their car was struck in the side by a Jeep Cherokee that state police said ran a traffic light. The three teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene. Yesterday, Weichert's parents stood on the porch of their home, stunned by the death of their youngest child.

A man was killed last night near East Monument Street and Pulaski Highway when his car struck the side of a tractor-trailer hauling 2 tons of steel beams, police said. Shawn Junie Braxton, 36, of the 3100 block of E. Baltimore St. was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu west in the 5000 block of E. Monument St. about 7 p.m. when he crashed into the tractor-trailer owned by Durrett Sheppard Steel Co., which was leaving the company's parking lot, said Officer Richard McCarthy, a traffic investigator.

A car struck and killed an 18-year-old Laurel pedestrian early yesterday in an accident on U.S. 1 near the Prince George's County line, Howard County police said.Shannon M. Christian of the 100 block of Washington Blvd. was hit by a 1992 Dodge Dynasty about 12: 30 a.m., police said. She was walking in the northbound lane of U.S. 1, the driver of the car told police.Motorist Jeanette M. Gavel, 46, of the 9000 block of Cissell Ave., Laurel, was not injured and has not been charged, police said.

A Fort Meade man was arrested Monday morning and charged with stealing a Columbia woman's car and leading several state police cruisers on a high-speed chase through western Anne Arundel County.Charles William Queen, 31, of the 1600 block of Annapolis Road was charged with auto theft and numerous traffic violations. An outstanding burglary warrant also was served on him.Queen is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center.Debra Lynn Smith of the 6700 block of Second Morning Court told Howard County police that someone stole her green 1992 Dodge Shadow about 10: 20 a.m. while she was getting gas at the Crown gas station on Route 216 in Laurel.

A police officer and a woman at the scene of a traffic accident were taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center last night after they were struck by a car in Southwest Baltimore, police said. The officer was assisting drivers of two cars involved in a minor accident about 6:15 p.m. in the 900 block of Caton Ave., near Cardinal Gibbons and Seton Keough high schools, when a third car struck the officer and the woman, police said. The woman was the driver of one of the stopped cars, Baltimore police spokesman Agent Donny Moses said.
