Helen N. Caplan, an activist who worked to save her Mount Washington neighborhood from uncontrolled development and who was a friend of President Clinton for 30 years, died Friday of cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She was 81.After she married Marvin Caplan in 1932, they moved to Mount Washington, the one-time resort where Baltimoreans of the 1880s and 1890s went to escape the summer heat. In the early 1960s when development began to threaten the serene surroundings of the Northwest Baltimore neighborhood, she helped establish the Mount Washington Improvement Association.

50 Years Ago (week of Feb. 9-15, 1941):* Samuel H. Caplan and Gertrude Dorothy Klein were married Sunday, Feb. 9, at the home of the groom's mother, Rachel Caplan of Ellicott City. The wedding was attended by the immediate families of the bride and groom. Mr. Caplan was a graduate of Ellicott City High School and Johns Hopkins University.He studied medicine at the University of Maryland, but gave up his studies in 1923 to go into the dry goods business with his mother in Ellicott City. Following the wedding reception, Mr. and Mrs. Caplan took a honeymoon motor trip to Florida.

Edward Caplan, founder of a Baltimore plumbing company and a decorated World War II veteran, died of congestive heart failure Sunday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. The Mount Washington resident was 83. The son of immigrant Russian parents, he was born and raised on Eden Street in East Baltimore. He attended Talmudical Academy before cutting short his education to help support his family. In his youth, he played baseball for the Brooklyn Athletic Association and always maintained that he would have been a professional player if not for injuries suffered in the war, family members said.
