Mount St. Mary's took over sole possession of first place in the Northeast Conference by defeating St. Francis, Pa., 68-65, yesterday in women's basketball at Knott Arena in Emmitsburg. St. Francis (9-4, 4-1) took its first lead at 41-39, but the Mount regained the lead, stretched it to 56-47, and Vera Feldbusch (17 points, 8 rebounds) scored the clincher with a three-pointer inside the final minute. The Red Flash had two chances to tie, but could not convert. Megan Gardiner chipped in 14 points for the Mount (9-4, 4-0)

The UMBC women's basketball team broke a four-game losing streak with a 59-51 victory over America East Conference rival-Boston University last night at RAC Arena. Brittnie Hughes turned in a career-high 16 points as the Retrievers (6-6, 2-1) shot 44.7 percent from the field, making 17 of 38 attempts. The Retrievers turned momentum in their favor late in the first half, finishing with a 10-0 run after trailing 28-24 with 4.57 remaining. Matea Pender, who was leading the nation in three-point shooting entering the week (62.5 percent)

Guard Sherie Cornish scored 19 points to lead three players in double figures as host Morgan State ended a 19-game losing streak dating to last season with a 56-49 victory over winless North Carolina A&T yesterday. The Bears (1-17, 1-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) won by dominating the boards, out-rebounding the Aggies 42-26, though coach Gerard Garlic said his team still failed to play up to its potential. "I guess others will say that we got the monkey off our back, but I've felt like we've been in a whole lot of games and played well," Garlic said.

The Seahawks (7-7, 3-2) got a game-high 17 points from Harvey Davis.Johns Hopkins 69, Ursinus 50: Joel Wertman had a game-high 27 points as the host Blue Jays (12-3, 3-1 Centennial Conference) beat the Bears (8-6, 4-1) for the 11th time in 13 games.The Blue Jays finished with 10 blocks, one shy of a school record.

Jason Morgan scored 26 points and Clifford Strong had 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead St. Francis, N.Y., to an 85-73 win over host Mount St. Mary's last night, Chris Stockwell added 21 points for the Terriers (8-5, 5-2 Northeast Conference). Jamion Christian scored 17 points and Jason Epps added 11 for the Mountaineers (1-13, 0-7). St. Francis led 43-27 at halftime but the Mount made it close in the second half by shooting 50 percent from the field (15-for-30). The Terps improved to 13-7 overall and 5-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Lady Tigers fell to 15-4 and 5-3. Doron, a freshman guard, also had seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. Senior Heidi Pearce scored three goals and had three assists as the 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins women remained undefeated with a 13-7 victory over American yesterday at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays (8-0) jumped out to a 6-3 lead and had a 9-5 advantage at halftime. The second half remained scoreless for the first 10 minutes before Meagan Voight scored off an assist from Erin Riordan and Mary Key scored a free-position goal at the 11:00 mark to put Hopkins up 11-6. Hopkins held a 33-23 advantage in shots and a 29-26 edge in ground balls while winning 13 of the 22 draw controls.

Kate Guggino scored 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds last night and host Goucher won its first Capital Athletic Conference playoff game in eight years, 52-49, over Mary Washington at the Sports and Recreation Center in Towson. The Gophers (15-9) claimed the lead for good with 2:46 remaining and Guggino clinched it with two free throws with 19 seconds left. Debbie Bruen led the Eagles (12-13) with 23 points. Catholic 66, St. Mary's 54: Lindsay DiRomualdo scored 24 points as the host Cardinals (21-5)
