BUCKEYSTOWN - Allie Conrad picks up a lead rope and begins walking the big chestnut down the lane to another field at Long Lane Farm. The horse moves gingerly because of cartilage problems in his ankles. The horse, Thisbidsforyou, was bred to be a winner, as all racehorses are in the eyes of their breeders. Sired by Winning Bid and with a pedigree that includes Mr. Prospector, Secretariat and Northern Dancer in his bloodlines, he certainly had a chance. But bad ankles derailed his racing career.

Kathleen `Kate' Farris urges her horse Image through the streets of her Glenelg neighborhood. He briefly startles at a bunch of pink balloons tied to a mailbox, but the movement barely disrupts the little Morgan's trot as he pulls Farris in a two-wheel cart. At stop signs, Image halts perfectly - vital obedience, because creeping or jigging forward could mean being struck by a car. It's all part of training for combined driving events, an equine sport that Kate Farris - and Image - love.

Wayne Canter sees a weather pattern: "I live in Perry Hall ... When there is a line of thunderstorms approaching, they either fall apart or split apart just before reaching Perry Hall, only to re-energize after leaving the area." He asks if I have a theory to explain it. I do. It's the "New Seed Theorem." Someone has planted a lawn in Perry Hall, and this is his inevitable punishment: No rain. It's a corollary to the "Clean Car Law." Wash your car, and it will rain.
