Candice C. Marsh had been to John Andrykis' home near Lynch Cove in Dundalk only two or three times when, she said, she drove her brother-in-law and his girlfriend there the night of Oct. 6, 1984, to try to get money or cocaine from the man. She said that because she was afraid of Andrykis' dog, she stayed in the car -- until she heard arguing. "I got out of my car to see what was going on, and I heard gunshots. My legs went out. Then I heard Mr. John saying, `my heart, my heart,'" Marsh told a jury yesterday in Baltimore County Circuit Court during the second day of testimony in the murder trial of her former brother-in-law, David W. Marsh, 45, and his one-time girlfriend, Joann Knight, 46. Lawyers for the defendants, however, say the prosecution's principal witness is not to be believed.

Nearly 20 years after a 69-year-old Dundalk man was found fatally shot outside his home in an isolated industrial area, prosecutors began yesterday building a case against the couple they say killed him and ransacked his house looking for drugs and money. Prosecutors told a jury yesterday in Baltimore County Circuit Court that the case against David W. Marsh, 45, and Joann Knight, 46, rests with a single witness -- the woman who was waiting in a car outside John Andrykis' home when he was killed.

It took nearly two decades, a woman named Jennifer Jenifer and a convenience store robbery in Florida, but authorities have made an arrest in a 1984 fatal shooting in Dundalk. Sheriff's deputies in Marion County, Fla., arrested Joann Culotta -- now a 45-year-old painter known as Joann Knight -- Monday on a warrant charging her with first-degree-murder. Culotta is charged in the slaying of 69-year-old John Andrykis on Oct. 7, 1984, according to documents filed in Baltimore County District Court.

As Coppin State women's volleyball coach Stephanie Ready recalled, her team saw last night's regular-season finale against Maryland-Eastern Shore as a case of now or never. The Eagles, mired in a 129-match losing streak, chose now and beat UMES in a seemingly interminable, two-hour contest, 15-8, 8-15, 8-15, 16-14, 23-21, at the Coppin Center, the cheering section of 207 spilling onto the court immediately afterward."It took long enough, but we got it," Ready said after the team's first win since Oct. 19, 1993, against Wilson College.
