In Baltimore County Parkville Middle pupil contracts meningitis, in critical condition TOWSON -- A Parkville Middle School pupil has been diagnosed with meningitis -- the same disease that killed a Towson University student this week. Christopher Vananzo, 14, was in critical condition at Sinai Hospital yesterday evening, said Gretchen Genello, a hospital spokeswoman. Parents who believe their child might have come in close contact with Vananzo have been urged to seek medical advice from their family physician.

The Rev. Wilburn S. Watson, whose career as pastor of Olivet Baptist Church spanned nearly 50 years, died Feb. 24 of complications from diabetes at Northwest Hospital Center. He was 80. Mr. Watson was born and raised in Baltimore and graduated in 1943 from Douglass High School. He earned his divinity degree from Morris College in Sumter, S.C. Mr. Watson was 17 when he began preaching. A self-taught pianist, he began incorporating piano and singing into his sermons at Canaan Baptist Church in Baltimore.

A report on homelessness released this week says Baltimore shelters turn someone away 20,000 times a year, and members of the task force that studied the issue are calling for a City Council hearing on the problem. The report was produced over a five-month period by the Baltimore City Task Force on Homelessness, a coalition of government agencies, religious organizations, businesses, universities, unions and social service groups formed by former Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke shortly before he left office last year.

Dyer, who was the Harford County administrative judge before retiring from the Circuit Court there in 1976, died Wednesday of pneumonia at his home in a retirement community in Matthews, N.C. He was 79.A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sept. 12 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Bel Air.Judge Dyer, who moved from Bel Air to the North Carolina community in 1991, was named a Circuit Court judge in 1963. From 1955 to 1963 he was state's attorney in Harford County.

The Rev. Carlton Lewis Sr., a former steel worker who served as pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Turners Station since 1991, died in his sleep July 20 at Future Care Canton Harbor nursing home. The longtime Dundalk resident, who had not retired, was 82. "Everyone in Turners Station knows that we've lost a really good man," said the Rev. Joseph Lewis (no relation), pastor of Greater St. John Baptist Church, also in Turners Station. "He loved singing and preaching. He loved the Lord.
