In a recent commentary, former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. described several examples of what he saw as over-the-top political correctness on college and university campuses ("Campus liberals run amok," Feb. 24). However, one does not need to resort to such extreme examples. An undercurrent of liberal thought runs through day-to-day life on every public college and university campus. There seem to be at least two reasons for this dreadful problem. First, professors are trained to think through issues, and they are charged with teaching students to do so as well.

A 19-year-old man who was stabbed on the campus of Coppin State University on Wednesday evening is expected to survive his injuries, Baltimore police said. City police responded to a call reporting an assault on the campus about 5 p.m. and found the injured man, who was taken to a hospital. Police did not know whether the man was a student. Campus police officials declined to comment Wednesday night. Police said the man is believed to have gotten into a fight with a suspect before he was stabbed, and the suspect fled before police arrived.

A police recruit wounded in a training exercise can respond through hand signals but remains hospitalized with an unclear path to recovery, said a Baltimore attorney representing the officer. State police identified the injured officer candidate on Wednesday as Raymond Gray, 43, of Baltimore. Gray, who was training to be a University of Maryland campus police officer, was accidentally shot in the head with a live round Feb. 12 during what authorities have described as an unauthorized training exercise using simulated ammunition.

University of Maryland, Eastern Shore officials on Monday said state police are investigating assertions that campus officers took an extended period of time to respond to the fatal stabbing of a student during homecoming weekend. Edmond A. St. Clair, 21, of Severn was stabbed on the Princess Anne campus Saturday night. St. Clair's family has said that it took too long for police to help him and that the assailants lingered at the scene after the stabbing. Campus spokesman Bill Robinson said state police are constructing a timeline.

A University of Maryland, Eastern Shore student was stabbed to death this weekend during a fight as the campus celebrated homecoming - plunging another state school into grief after an apparent murder-suicide left two students dead in College Park less than a week ago. Maryland State Police identified the UMES student as Edmond A. St. Clair, a 21-year-old junior biology major from Severn who graduated from Laurel High School in 2010. Friends, teachers and family members said he excelled in college, dreamed of becoming a doctor or surgeon and had a passion for producing reggae-style music.

When the University of Maryland issues its end-of-year crime report to the U.S. Department of Education - as is required by federal law - it will not include the recent off-campus shooting that left two students dead and another wounded. Though the violence occurred less than a quarter-mile from campus, the university is not required to report it under the 1990 Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistic Act . "The rules for Clery reporting are very exact, and this incident will not fall into the geographic area for which we report," Crystal Brown, a university spokeswoman, said in an email.

In the days before police say he was fatally shot by his roommate Dayvon Green outside their College Park home, University of Maryland senior Stephen Rane had expressed concerns about Green having a mental illness and owning guns, according to a close friend. "I know that he did feel uncomfortable in the house," said Drew Needham, a senior who lived with Rane for two years before Rane decided to move off campus into the 36th Avenue home with at least four others, including Green, a 23-year-old graduate engineering student.

There is still much we do not know about Dayvon Green, the University of Maryland, College Park student who police say fatally shot one of his roommates, Stephen Alex Rane, and seriously wounded another outside their off-campus apartment before taking his own life on Tuesday. Mr. Green, a promising graduate engineering student from the Baltimore area, reportedly was under treatment for mental illness, and though the precise nature of his condition has not been confirmed, investigators believe it may have been a factor in this horrible crime.

Maryland has finalized plans to honor former basketball coach Lefty Driesell with a bronze relief that will hang at Comcast Center, sources say. Driesell is to be honored at the Clemson game Feb. 23. Then, on April 16, a number of Driesell's former players are expected to attend a ceremony to unveil the bronze bas-relief. It “will be displayed on the Comcast wall interior next to the portion of the floor from Cole Field House,” said a letter circulated among Driesell's supporters to raise funds for the project.
