The Orioles undoubtedly were hoping that Miguel Tejada would report to training camp early this spring to begin the transition from shortstop to third base, but he was one of only a small handful of players who have not yet made an appearance at the Ed Smith Stadium complex. O's officials say that's no big deal. The first full-squad workout is scheduled for today and that's when players are required to be here. Many position players report before that, but they aren't required to and clubs are not allowed to pressure them to come in before the official reporting date.

There's no doubting Tony Ewers' passion for the Baltimore Ravens. Just look at his lower leg, with its tattoo of a glowering black bird preparing to snap a football. Yet until Friday, the 43-year-old quarry manager from Forest Hill had never ventured to Westminster for the team's training camp. Ewers had plenty of company Friday at McDaniel College. The attendance of 11,506 set a record for a non-scrimmage practice, the Ravens said. The experience made quite an impression on Ewers.

Second-year offensive tackle Jah Reid , a potential key reserve along the offensive line, is practicing today for the first time during training camp. Reid had been sidelined with a strained right calf muscle that he initially hurt during the mandatory veteran minicamp in mid-June. Reid then aggravated the injury preparing for training camp. Wide receiver Tandon Doss (hamstring) and cornerback Chykie Brown (hamstring) also returned to practice today, and linebacker and special teams ace Brendon Ayanbadejo , who left yesterday's practice early because of some knee discomfort, is participating as well.

Less than 24 hours before quarterbacks, rookies and players coming off injuries participate in their first practice of training camp, the Ravens made a roster move today, releasing guard Howard Barbieri. The Ravens signed Barbieri in January to a reserve/futures contract. He did not participate in the offseason team activities because of an undisclosed injury. Barbieri, 24, played his college ball at Rutgers. The 24-year-old was with the Houston Texans last year but has never played in an NFL game.

New Orioles addition Zelous Wheeler arrived at camp Sunday ready to play in the team's Grapefruit League finale against the Rays at Ed Smith Stadium. The Orioles claimed Wheeler off waivers from the Brewers on Thursday, part of a move than included the team designating left-hander Dana Eveland for assignment. Wheeler, who was training with the Brewers in Arizona when he found out he had been claimed, said hearing the news was a surprise. “Big surprise,” he said. “I was coming off the field from my workout and I was getting ready for a 1 o'clock game and they said, 'We need to see you,' and they told me I was picked up by the Orioles.

Sabastian and Mason Chizhik enjoy science classes, but they say their teachers often ask questions about nature that leave them searching in vain for answers. Now, having gone to the Earth Art summer camp this week at the Howard Conservancy, the brothers from Marriottsville say they've gained a wealth of knowledge about the great outdoors that they will retrieve when called upon in class. "Last year, my teacher, she liked nature, so she kept asking us questions," said Mason, a rising third-grader.
