Ensemble to sing at dinner theaterLocal builder receives award from the YMCAMartin K. P. Hill, president of Masonry Contractors in Hampstead, received the YMCA of Greater Baltimore's 1992 Chairman's Award.He received this award for being chairman of the capital campaign fund-raising drive for the new YMCA building in Westminster.Mr. Hill also organized the committee of local builders that constructed a pavilion for the day camp program.FIRES* Lineboro: Units from Lineboro, Manchester, Hampstead and Pleasant Hill of Pennsylvania battled a chimney and roof fire at a house on York Road No. 1 at 3:21 p.m. Friday.

Camp Invention arrives at Forest Hill Elementary School tomorrow for a weeklong run. Children entering grades one through five will design machinery from old appliances, have fun with physics, play amateur detectives and communicate with aliens. During the version of the camp that was held at Ring Factory Elementary last week, students built cars, boats and planes - and antenna to contact spacemen. Forest Hill, just north of Bel Air, is the last elementary school to participate in the camp program, sponsored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Schimunek Funeral Home, Inc., 9705 Belair Road, (Perry Hall), on Sunday, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, at 9:30 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church (Fullerton). Interment Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery.

ANNAPOLIS -- The state should abandon its elusive goal of trying to rehabilitate inmates at the Patuxent Institution, Maryland's prisons chief said yesterday.Instead, Bishop L. Robinson told a legislative committee that more manageable problems, such as treating inmates with mental illnesses or those hooked on drugs or alcohol, should receive state priority.Mr. Robinson, the secretary of public safety and correctional services, also recommended that certain young criminals who are ineligible for the state's boot camp program be sent to basic education courses to be offered at Patuxent.

Baseball school -- The Centennial High School Boosters will offer the second session of the Eagle Baseball School, a summer camp program for boys ages 7 to 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 30 through Aug. 3. The camp, directed by Centennial's boys varsity baseball coach Denis Ahearn, will offer instruction and drills in throwing, hitting, fielding, base running, catching and strategy. Area players and coaches give lectures and demonstrations. The emphasis is on fundamentals, sportsmanship and fun. The program includes contests, treats, a report card and certificates.

A Columbia woman is suing Howard County, claiming that negligent supervision contributed to the near drowning of her daughter at an Ellicott City swimming pool during a county-sponsored camp program in 1996.Andrea Thorne of the 5900 block of Grand Banks Road claims that county employees with the "Camp Community" program took her daughter, Jarnel, then 9, and 16 others in the program to the Roger Carter Neighborhood Center pool June 24, 1996.The suit contends that employees did not notice Jarnel entering the pool and sinking to the bottom after the adult swim was over about 2 p.m. One of the children told a lifeguard, who pulled the unconscious girl from the pool, the suit says.

Several handicapped children who were left without a way to get to summer camp because of cuts in Baltimore County's budget will be given free rides by a private ambulance company.Joe Dulany, chief executive officer of the Advanced Care Ambulance Co., learned of the children's plight after reading news reports outlining the difficulties of transporting a severely handicapped child. This is the first year Baltimore County has eliminated its transportation for handicapped campers."It's ludicrous.

Linda S. Greenberg of Annapolis was recently named the YMCA Camp Letts Volunteer of the Year by the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, for her Homeless Summer Camp program, now in its fifth year.The camp was also honored with the President's Cup Award for its part in the program.This award honors new and innovative YMCA programs that best exemplify the spirit and mission of the YMCA in serving the community.The program arranges for 40 homeless children, chosen from shelters in Maryland, to spend two weeks at Camp Letts in Edgewater, where they enjoy a full range of activities.

Tennis courts open SaturdayGlenelg Country School will celebrate the opening of its four tennis courts with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by a round-robin tennis tournament and light refreshments.The tournament will include matches between tennis team members and the school's trustees, students and faculty members, and students and parents.John Ramos, the school's new tennis pro, will be on hand to discuss lessons and Tennis Club memberships, which will be available for evening and weekend play.

Michele Lawrence, a 1995 graduate of Liberty High School, is spending part of the summer in Huntsville, Ala., teaching high school students who are attending the U.S. Space Camp Program.A student at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Fla., she is an honor student and will be inducted into the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society in the fall.She is president of Zeta Chi Sorority and a member of the American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics and Students for Exploration and Development of Space.
