WASHINGTON - Calvin Johnson got an e-mail from a partner in his lobbying firm yesterday suggesting that they buy season tickets for the city's new baseball team. The message included a prospective schedule so Johnson could reserve some games for client outings. But, Mr. Johnson, the capital doesn't actually have a team right now. No matter, the baseball fan insists, it's coming. Johnson, well practiced in counting votes on Capitol Hill, has studied his baseball politics and feels so confident that the city will finally get a franchise that he's already planning what he'll do when it does.

Ravens cornerback Cary Williams said he had faith that the “Calvin Johnson” rule would bail him out. Despite the initial ruling of a 9-yard touchdown grab by Cincinnati Bengals tight end Jermaine Gresham, Williams said he felt fairly certain that the touchdown would be overturned after Gresham lost possession of the football after Williams tackled him. “He did a good job of catching it,” Williams said. “It was what it was, but I knew that from the Detroit play, they couldn't give it to him because he didn't have control going all the way to the ground.

The impact of Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones was obvious every time that one of the speedy outside wide receivers ran past flat-footed defenders and under a long, arching throw from Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco. Smith, now entering his third season, has quickly become one of the NFL's premier deep threats. And Jones, who got behind defenses for huge touchdowns twice in the postseason, also has speed to be reckoned with. Part of their hidden impact -- besides forcing safeties to back away from the line of scrimmage to protect against the big play -- came in the penalties they drew downfield when they weren't catching Flacco's deep balls.

1 Injuries hit wide receivers. Derrick Mason and Mark Clayton have been durable throughout their careers, but both have dealt with significant injuries in the past year. This already criticized group doesn't have the depth to deal with any losses. 2 Steve Hauschka struggles in his first year as kicker. No one is under the fans' microscope more than Hauschka, who has the unenviable task of replacing Matt Stover. But the real pressure will come when he attempts his first potentially game-winning kick in the fourth quarter.
