On Nightlife No, Club X Ultra Lounge is not a strip joint. Though its name (actually pronounced Club Ten), location (10 S. Calvert St.) and facade (bright purple lights) might suggest otherwise, the place has a solid mix of style, attitude and class. I wouldn't be surprised to see the month-old lounge turn into a regular weekend hangout for the city's high-rolling 30-something set. Parking is free on most of Calvert Street late at night, but if you can't find a spot less than a block or two away, it is safer to use the valet service.

A temporary swath of arty orange - it's all the rage. On Sunday, thousands of people bade farewell to New York City's The Gates, a grand-scale art project in saffron-colored fabric that attracted visitors to Central Park for 16 days, then provoked them to decipher its meaning. Yesterday, in downtown Baltimore, a smaller but still very orange piece of art appeared on the face of a vacant building. No great breadth. Absolutely no ballyhoo. Yet the people behind this unnamed installation hope that, like its big New York brother, it will spark interest and, if nothing else, brighten a dreary city block.

More housing could be headed to the heart of Baltimore's downtown, in another sign that an area once dominated by office buildings is shifting to hotels and apartments. The city's economic development agency has asked developers to submit plans for turning much of the northwest corner of Calvert and Lombard streets into residences with built-in parking. The city seems interested in a mix of preservation and new construction, with street-level retail. The project area would cover eight buildings - which the city owns, is acquiring or has legal power to buy - that bracket the Brookshire Suites hotel, which is not part of the deal.
