Calvert Hall, Mount St. Joseph and Westminster made tremendous leaps in this week's Maryland High School Football Media State Poll after scoring big upsets over the weekend. Tuesday, in the first state poll since the preseason edition, Calvert Hall (2-0) soared from No. 25 to No. 6 with its 35-24 win over then-No. 4 Franklin while Mount Saint Joseph and Westminster broke into the poll after being unranked. Mount Saint Joseph debuted at No. 8 with Monday's 20-14 win over then-No.

The commercial real estate firm CBRE is hosting an event Thursday at The Baltimore Sun's offices on North Calvert Street for brokers to get a feel for unused space in the building, according to the news company's head of operations. The Sun, and other divisions of The Tribune Co., have been working with CBRE for several months to promote leasable space in buildings that have become too large for the news businesses they house, said Stephen Seidl, the Sun's senior vice president for operations and technology.

This is the way the Mercy Medical Center parking garage ended: not with a whimper, but a bang. And a bang. And a bang. And still more bangs. In mere seconds, the 10-story garage on Calvert Street collapsed into itself and passed into memory, leaving behind a crater-like hole, thousands of tons of rubble and, in the air and everywhere, clouds of fine dust. "This is step No. 1," said Dan Collins, senior director of media relations for the medical center. Once the site is cleared - a process that will take about a month, he said - plans for the new 18-story medical tower on the site can move forward.

Firefighters rescued a man yesterday morning from a burning fourth-story apartment in Baltimore's Mid-Town Belvedere neighborhood, a department spokesman said, adding that the man suffered smoke inhalation but that his condition was not life threatening. Chief Kevin Cartwright, the spokesman, said the fire was reported about 6:15 a.m. in a brick rowhouse that had been converted to apartments in the 1000 block of N. Calvert St. Callers to 911 reported seeing a man in a window surrounded by smoke and flames.
