Owen Carlson, a retired computer engineer who lived in Baltimore for more than 50 years, died of Alzheimer's disease Wednesday at a veterans hospital in Columbia, S.C. He was 82.Born in Calumet, Mich., Mr. Carlson earned an associate's degree at Michigan Technical College before working in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a first lieutenant in the Army, serving in World War II and Korea.Mr. Carlson moved to Baltimore after World War II and worked for many years for what was then the Glenn L. Martin Co. He then was a computer engineer at Informatics Inc. in College Park for more than 15 years.

Under what The Sun described as "billowing white clouds hung suspended in an azure sky, an all-star crowd of 32,244 crammed into Old Hilltop to witness the 72nd running of the Preakness in 1948.Included among the illuminati were cabinet members, statemen and congressmen, and such personalities as J. Edgar Hoover, Clyde Tolson, Gen. Omar N. Bradley, Dorothy Lamour and her husband, William Ross Howard."The enlarged dining room force had hardly completed placing table silver and the Woodlawn vase and its replica on a hall table in the clubhouse when the first of the many distinguished guests arrived, many wearing straw hats," reported The Sun. The crowd was serenaded by a red-coated 75-piece brass band, playing "Dixie" and "Maryland, My Maryland.

Gary Stevens caught the water bottle tossed his way, took one swig and threw it back. “He don't want any?” a man asked, considering jockeys usually shower their horses, too. Stevens shook his head from his perch atop Oxbow, the wire-to-wire winner of the 138th Preakness. “Ain't even tired,” he said. Stevens, a 50-year-old grandfather who came out of a seven-year retirement at the beginning of the year, used a daring ride to clinch an anti-climatic second leg of the Triple Crown at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday.

A 29-year-old man accused of first-degree murder in a July shooting near the Maryland Penitentiary that killed one man and wounded eight bystanders was in surgery last night at Sinai Hospital after being shot several times Wednesday night in Northwest Baltimore.Police have not been able to question Tyrone Taylor of the 2300 block of McCulloh St., since his hospitalization and do not know if the shooting was related to the July incident, said Detective David Neverdon."Hopefully, if he survives, he'll be able to shed some light on it," Detective Neverdon said.

DID YOU REALIZE that many people recently became discouraged with dividends because they slipped below 3 percent in 1992 and remained low ever since? Especially in this bull market, you often hear, "Dividends don't matter."But don't count them out. Over 70 years, dividends accounted for 43 percent of the total return on the Standard & Poor's 500 index stocks, which compounded at 10.7 percent a year. But because of stocks' meteoric rise recently, dividends slipped to 17 percent of the S&P stocks' total return.
