If it's 8 a.m. on a school day in Hampstead, Roxanne LaVoie will be there -- in blazing orange vest and sunglasses at the corner of Boxwood Drive and Northwoods Trail.She's Hampstead's school crossing guard, sifting the flow of school buses, cars and a walking parade of families on their way to Spring Garden Elementary School.At lunchtime, the vest comes off and she goes to work in the cafeteria -- at Hampstead Elementary. "That's where my own kids go," she said.She's back on the street for the afternoon rush around 3 p.m. In the crowd of 693 students, she's begun to know whom to expect out first and last.

The play's the thingWherein I catchthe conscience of the king.+"Hamlet," by ShakespeareTHE PLAY certainly was the thing for fourth-grade pupils at Point Pleasant Elementary School, who recently participated in a play-building workshop presented by Interact Story Theater of Silver Spring.Sponsored by the school's PTA and a grant from the state Cultural Arts Foundation, the weeklong workshop emphasized the relationship between writing plays and the acting, staging technique, costume changes, props and timing of a production.

MARKETPLACE A.D. 29 comes to Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church, beginning July 7 and continuing for eight Sundays.Sunday School students will experience life in A.D. 29 by making and learning to play games, hearing Bible stories, singing songs, weaving a mat and making their own manna. Everyone is invited to join in the fun and learning. Class runs from 9: 40 a.m. to 10: 40 a.m."Wonderful Wednesdays" return to the church next week. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., everyone is invited for a trip around the world.

GLEN BURNIE Senior High will celebrate homecoming with a week of activities sponsored by the Student Government Association.One of the week's highlights will be a sobering message about the potential effect of drinking and driving. The association has arranged to display on the campus a vehicle that was involved in a drunken driving accident.Association members dressed as Grim Reapers will select volunteers to represent accident victims. The Grim Reapers will walk around school Monday and "kill people" by painting their faces white.

The Belle Grove Improvement Association's monthly meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the media center at Belle Grove Elementary School, 4502 Belle Grove Road. The fall flea market will be among the projects discussed.The evening's guest speaker will be Officer Tim Brown of the Anne Arundel County Police Department's Northern District. Officer Brown will speak about neighborhood concerns and the work being done by the security patrol.*Brooklyn Park Health Association will begin its monthly meetings for the 1995-1996 season at 7 p.m. Thursday at the health center, 300 Hammonds Lane.

The Meade High School Drama Club is proud to announce its spring production of "42nd Street."Barbara Zucco is producing the musical with a company of 60 students. Meade drama faculty adviser George Pelham is back in the director's chair, after a year off to recover from an auto accident. Musical direction is provided by Joyce Nellenvack for vocals and John Collins for orchestra.Choreographer Arlene Crum has taken on the task of teaching the 25 cast members tap dancing. She will be assisted by Karen Zucco and Denise Maxwell.

Students new to Glen Burnie High School this year are invited to an orientation seminar at 7 p.m. Aug. 24, in the school's main auditorium. Though the seminar is targeted at incoming ninth-graders, the information and tour will benefit all new students. Principal Oliver Wittig will address students and their parents.Although this is Dr. Wittig's first year as principal, his face is familiar to many of the staff. He was an assistant principal at Glen Burnie before leaving for his recent stint as principal of Severna Park High.

Civic groups and merchants are hoping for a clean sweep May 15 in Odenton.That's the day volunteers will swarm over the area to clean up winter debris and plant flowers.Volunteers will plant barrels of flowers and place them in front of North Odenton businesses as part of a beautification project sponsored by the West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce.Business owners have purchased the barrels and will maintain them. A variety of flowers will line the route. Flowers also will be planted at the intersection of Piney Orchard Parkway and Route 175. The event is set for 9 a.m. to noon, May 15.The second event, sponsored by the West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Odenton Improvement Association,is the annual cleanup of Route 175.Volunteers should meet at 9 a.m. in the Odenton Shopping Center parking lot. Trash bags will be provided.
