An article in the Howard County edition of The Sun yesterday incorrectly reported the primary vote received by Howard County Register of Wills Kay Hartleb. She received 8,782 votes to 3,077 for her Republican opponent. In the uncontested Democratic primary, Patricia S. Gordon received 13,640 votes. The Sun regrets the error. They do not seek judgeships. They aren't vying to be top prosecutors and there's no gun to sport. In fact, many observers agree the positions probably are the least glamorous jobs in the Howard County circuit courthouse.

A 12-year-old Sykesville Boy Scout was recovering yesterday in a Pittsburgh hospital after a seven-hour rescue from a southwestern Pennsylvania cavern, a hospital spokeswoman said. John Graybeal was in good condition, according to the spokeswoman for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. The Mountview Middle School sixth-grader said he entered Laurel Caverns in Hopwood, Pa., about 50 miles south of Pittsburgh, with his troop and a professional guide Saturday. The troop was exploring an area called "the Beach," when John slipped and fell between rocks, said David Cale, who owns the land and buildings at Laurel Caverns.

Political races in the lower ranks of the legal system in Howard County seldom generate much interest, and this year's are no exception. In the races for sheriff, Clerk of the Court and Register of Wills, few issues have surfaced as critical and the campaigning has been largely uneventful.Incumbent Sheriff Michael A. Chiuchiolo is the overwhelming favorite to win re-election. A Democrat, Mr. Chiuchiolo took over the sheriff's office four years ago when it was in the midst of an embarrassing scandal.

At the bottom of Howard County's primary election ballot, far from the televised buzz of this year's big-ticket political campaigns, four people are vying Tuesday for jobs that voters often forget. They are running for office, but they do not want to be lawmakers. They align themselves with a political party, but the jobs they seek are about as partisan as a librarian's.They are the candidates for clerk of the Circuit Court and register of wills, and even the best-connected politicos barely know who they are.Said Carole Fisher, chairwoman of the Howard County Democratic Central Committee: "I'd be just as happy if those were appointed positions.

In the race for Howard County sheriff, incumbent Michael A. Chiuchiolo has no opposition for the Democratic nomination. The 53-year-old sheriff is probably best known for whom he fired in 1991: twin brothers who were deputy sheriffs but prone to mimicking Nazis while on the job. Donald and Dennis Pruitt tried to pass off their behavior as harmless joking, but the brothers -- the department's second- and third-ranking officers at the time -- persisted over...

County officials are spending about $35,000 to upgrade the air-quality system at the Howard County Circuit Courthouse, where many employees have complained of health problems possibly caused by poor ventilation. The upgrades, including new filters and vacuum cleaners thatremove fine particles from the air, follow requests from courthouse employees, county officials said.An informal survey by a courthouse worker found 40 of the building's 150 employees experienced headaches at work. Many also reported sinus problems and eye irritations.
