Jane Buxton Brown of Lakehurst wonders about the solar system: "Will you tell me how planets got into their orbits originally, and why they stay in them?" The planets condensed and grew amid cooling and collisions of gas and dust in the rotating solar "nebula" that circled the infant sun. Momentum will keep them circling unless something - the pull of a passing star, perhaps - kicks them out.

Phyllis S. Buxton, a retired educator and sculptor, died of pneumonia April 3 at Bryant Woods Inn, a Columbia group home for the elderly. She was 85.The former Cross Keys and Chevy Chase resident was a special education teacher in Montgomery County schools from 1955 to 1961 and was instrumental in developing classes in Maryland for the developmentally disabled.Her interest in sculpture began during the 1930s as a student at the University of Michigan, where she studied with the noted sculptor Avard Fairbanks, who designed the Mack Truck bulldog.

While the Centennial baseball team has a firm hold on Division 1 in the county, the chase for the top spot in Division 2 remains up for grabs, with Howard finding its way into the mix. The Lions (11-3) went into the week on a nine-game winning streak -- capping last week's 3-0 effort with a key 6-5 win over Reservoir to grab a share of first place in the division. Howard, Reservoir and Atholton all went into the week with 9-3 county records. Howard coach Rich Jenkins said two familiar sources -- pitching and defense -- have played a big role in the team's success.

On Thursday, March 24, 2005, HOWARD CLAYTON SMITH beloved husband of Edna B. Smith (nee Ellis) loving and devoted father to Deborah K. Orpin and Donna L. Nodonly, father-in-law to Henry Orpin and David Nodonly, cherished grandfather to Randy Buxton, Kimberly Orpin and Lauren Orpin. He is also survived by two great-grandsons, Joshua and Spencer Buxton. Howard retired in 1985 as a Supervisor in the Electronic Test Department of BGE. He was a Past Master of the Glen Burnie Masonic Lodge #213 and Chairman of the Financial Advisory Board and By-Laws.

Marcelyn RuckerDesigned homesGraveside services for Marcelyn Elisabeth Buxton Rucker, a designer and builder of homes who designed her first house at age 13, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Druid Ridge Cemetery, Park Heights Avenue at Old Court Road.Mrs. Rucker, 85, died Tuesday of heart failure at Cliff Haven, the Buxton family home in Arnold, which she designed at age 13.Her father, William Bradbury Buxton, gave her free rein in designing the family's summer home, which was built in 1925.

Andrew Robert Buxton Cavendish, 84, the 11th Duke of Devonshire whose vast Chatsworth estate has one of the finest and most-visited houses in Britain, died there late Monday. The duke opened Chatsworth to the public in the 1950s and with his wife, the former Deborah Mitford, made it a thriving business, attracting a half-million visitors a year to its art collections and parkland. The house, mostly late 17th century, is surrounded by 35,000 acres of estate land in the heart of a national park in Derbyshire county, central England.
