Phyllis S. Buxton, a retired educator and sculptor, died of pneumonia April 3 at Bryant Woods Inn, a Columbia group home for the elderly. She was 85.The former Cross Keys and Chevy Chase resident was a special education teacher in Montgomery County schools from 1955 to 1961 and was instrumental in developing classes in Maryland for the developmentally disabled.Her interest in sculpture began during the 1930s as a student at the University of Michigan, where she studied with the noted sculptor Avard Fairbanks, who designed the Mack Truck bulldog.

While the Centennial baseball team has a firm hold on Division 1 in the county, the chase for the top spot in Division 2 remains up for grabs, with Howard finding its way into the mix. The Lions (11-3) went into the week on a nine-game winning streak -- capping last week's 3-0 effort with a key 6-5 win over Reservoir to grab a share of first place in the division. Andrew Robert Buxton Cavendish, 84, the 11th Duke of Devonshire whose vast Chatsworth estate has one of the finest and most-visited houses in Britain, died there late Monday. The duke opened Chatsworth to the public in the 1950s and with his wife, the former Deborah Mitford, made it a thriving business, attracting a half-million visitors a year to its art collections and parkland. The house, mostly late 17th century, is surrounded by 35,000 acres of estate land in the heart of a national park in Derbyshire county, central England.
