Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has famously declared that she wants her next job title to be "grandmother. " But a Harris Poll indicates that Mrs. Clinton is just about the only politician with a job approval rating above sea level. And a second survey suggests that American moms - remember the role of the soccer mom in 1996? - would rather vote for her for president than Barack Obama or any of the Republican candidates. It might be time to change the date on those "Hillary 2008" buttons.

An article in the Nov. 25, 1911 edition of The Argus reported on the happy outcome for a small child in an uncomfortable situation. Flora , the 3-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Logan Pingree , while playing Sunday morning on the floor in the kitchen of her parents' home, on Winters avenue, found a small shoe button, which she placed in her ear, and, although Dr. Marshall B. West worked over the child for several hours...

Local archaeologists have not only confirmed that Baltimore's Lafayette Square Park was once the stomping ground of a Civil War army barracks, but they also dug up a little-known fact about the soldiers who dwelled there: They had a knack for losing buttons. On Sunday, volunteers who joined the Baltimore Heritage and Archaeological Society of Maryland in searching for remnants at the former Union army encampment ended a three-day quest of exploring the park's history in the 19th century.

Rashard Mendenhall and Reggie Bush are star NFL running backs who have found themselves backpedaling after recent controversial remarks made on Twitter. Todd Reynolds is a sports agent whose recent comment about same-sex marriage on the microblogging service has sparked a firestorm in the NHL. Orlando Magic star Dwight Howard is drawing flak for using the up-to-140-character publishing tool to call out the Orlando Sentinel for what he called "dumb articles. The problem: A pedestrian signal button in Mount Washington was knocked down and never replaced. The back story: Jon Merryman often takes matters into his own hands — including trash. The Catonsville resident said he spends the hours while his son swims at Meadowbrook Aquatic Center wandering around Mount Washington, picking up garbage that would otherwise end up in the Jones Falls. These travels recently became more treacherous. A pedestrian signal button post on the southwest corner of Falls Road and Kelly Avenue had been knocked down during the winter.

Were the Packers-Steelers Super Bowl being played in 2020, this might be the view from your living room: You want to follow Troy Polamalu? Punch that information into your three-dimensional video display and a glowing virtual disk appears under the Steelers safety and tracks his every movement. You want to see how crisply Greg Jennings ran that route? Instruct the board to erase the players around him, and it's as if the Packers receiver is running alone. Every conceivable statistic, bit of historical information and on-field camera angle is a few button pushes away.

Sometimes you look at a decades-old photo of yourself at the beach and are struck by the thought that you should have worn more skimpy two-pieces while you had the chance. Sometimes you watch a mystery in a movie theater and realize you just don't enjoy it as much as you would at home, where you can use the remote to go back if you missed a clue. And sometimes you go to heat up your soup in the office microwave and glance at the controls and think, "What is this country coming to?" In my company's newly remodeled kitchenette sit two General Electric microwave ovens (because heaven knows we efficient Americans cannot be expected to wait while someone else flash-cooks his meal in less than two minutes)

Incoming Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker III lost no time this week in making good on his pledge to clean house in a county government widely perceived as riddled by corruption and still reeling from the arrests last month of former county executive Jack B. Johnson and his wife on charges of evidence tampering and destruction of evidence. Within hours of his swearing-in on Monday, Mr. Baker fired county Police Chief Roberto L. Hylton, three of whose officers are charged in the federal corruption probe linked to the Johnsons.

MINNEAPOLIS — Maybe it's the Yankees themselves. Maybe it's the Twins knowing it's the Yankees. And maybe it's a lethal combination of both. Whatever the reason, the postseason domination continued Thursday night with the Yankees producing their fifth straight American League Division Series victory over the Twins, this one 5-2 at Target Field. Now one game from moving to the American League Championship Series, the Yankees have won four of those five games in the sixth inning or later, including this one when Lance Berkman's "second-chance" double in the seventh gave the Yankees a lead and led to an ejection for Twins manager Ron Gardenhire.
