A 40-year-old woman died early Saturday after a fire in a Glen Burnie home, the second fire-related fatality in Anne Arundel County of the new year. County Fire Department Division Chief Keith Swindle said Shari Lee DeStefano was found in the basement of a one-story house in the Marley area and transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where she died of her injuries shortly after midnight. Nine adults and two children were displaced by the fire and given shelter, Swindle said.

Haines, a national floor covering distributor based in Glen Burnie, said Thursday it has acquired Allied Products of Baltimore, a 72-year-old flooring supplies distributor. The 138-year-old, privately held Haines, which calls itself the nation's largest flooring distributor for commercial and residential properties, did not disclose financial terms of the deal. The sale was finalized on Tuesday. Allied has 40 employees and annual sales of more than $10 million. Haines plans to hire all Allied workers and keep Allied's 11 locations in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina open.

A 24-year-old man who was partially ejected from a vehicle on Route 10 near Interstate 695 in Glen Burnie Jan. 1 is listed in critical but stable condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Anne Arundel County police officials said. A statement issued by the police office department Wednesday said that the driver, Daniel Alan Leitner, 24, of 4005 Washington Street in Baltimore, was traveling north on Route 10 and approaching the I-695 interchange when he did not negotiate a curve in the roadway.

Anne Arundel County police detectives are consulting with county prosecutors as they continue to investigate the fatal Christmas morning shooting by a Glen Burnie store employee of a man he said broke in, police said. Police said they were at the Arundel County Coin Shop in the 7400 block of Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard four previous times in December, including for a report of a possible break-in early Dec. 10 and for an alarm sounding about 4 a.m. Sunday. They said they also checked a vehicle near there at 12:45 a.m. Monday.

Anne Arundel County police are investigating a report that an employee in a coin shop in Glen Burnie shot and killed an intruder Tuesday morning. Officers responded to a 6:28 a.m. call Christmas morning at Arundel County Coin Shop in the 7400 block of Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard and were met by an employee of the business, police said. He told police that an intruder broke into the business while he was there, and during an altercation inside, the intruder was shot, police said.

Anne Arundel County Public School officials said on Thursday the county Department of Health has not recommended additional cleaning steps to be taken amid the Tuesday death of a Glen Burnie High School junior, who had become ill the day before with symptoms associated with bacterial meningitis. School officials on Wednesday said that a letter was sent home to students' parents outlining the girl's death and providing information about bacterial meningitis. "The county Department of Health has not recommended any additional cleaning procedures for us outside of our normal daily cleaning procedures," said Anne Arundel schools spokesman Bob Mosier.

A junior at Glen Burnie High School in Anne Arundel County died Tuesday after becoming ill the day before with symptoms associated with bacterial meningitis, school officials said Wednesday. A letter was sent home to students' parents Wednesday outlining the girl's death and providing facts about bacterial meningitis, which is less contagious than viral meningitis but still deadly, said Bob Mosier, a school system spokesman. The girl's illness has not been confirmed by doctors or a medical examiner to have been from meningitis, but the school system - in consultation with the county health department - decided to move proactively to alert the school community in case meningitis is confirmed, Mosier said.

Anne Arundel County police said they found a woman who drank herself to death in a Glen Burnie home Tuesday after her husband reported it during a traffic stop. An autopsy by the office of the chief medical examiner Tuesday showed that Bonnie Grace Anthony-Garde, 50, died from gastrointestinal bleeding due to excessive alcohol consumption, police said. Her husband had been stopped about 11 p.m. Monday at West Ordnance Road and Roberts Court on suspicion of drunken driving, police said.

A man was stabbed and a woman was assaulted early Saturday morning in Glen Burnie in what appears to be a domestic disturbance between two men and a woman, Anne Arundel County police said. Police responding to an incident at the 300 block of Klagg Court at approximately 12:52 a.m., said that Carlos Ellis Spencer, 28, of Baltimore forced his way into the residence and cut a male victim with a knife. The male victim sustained non-life threatening injuries before fleeing the scene, police said.
