Sydney L. "Syd" Burgee, former vice president of operations at Union Memorial Hospital, died Friday of liver disease at his Bel Air home. He was 80. The son of an accountant and a homemaker, Sydney Lanier Burgee was born in Baltimore and raised in Hamilton. After graduating in 1951 from City College, he earned a bachelor's degree in 1955 from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. He served with the Army in Alaska from 1955 to 1957. After being discharged and working in sales and in a pharmacy, he joined the staff of the old Hospital for the Women of Maryland in Bolton Hill.

Horace F. Burgee Jr., a popular and highly respected Hampden funeral director who served on the board of United Cerebral Palsy of Central Maryland for 40 years, died yesterday of pneumonia at University of Maryland Medical Center. He was 78.Mr. Burgee, known as Buzz, was born and raised above the two-story Burgee-Henss Funeral Home that was founded by his grandfather in a brick home at Falls Road and 36th Street in Hampden in 1899.The Towson resident continued working in the business until last year, and at the time of his death was chairman of the board of the funeral home.

Last week bigwigs in Annapolis city government said, "We've got a new burgee!" Most sailors are big fans of flags - particularly those little triangular ones, called burgees, that flutter from the sterns or masts of their boats. The city's burgee doesn't look a whole heck of a lot different from the city's official flag - which is perhaps the point. We chatted with Annapolis Mayor Ellen O. Moyer to try to understand the importance of this symbol. Hello, this is Annie Linskey with The Baltimore Sun, I was calling about the new burgee.

WHENEVER Baltimore residents need a business or marriage license, buy or sell real estate or are involved in an equity, civil or criminal case, the Circuit Court clerk's office keeps a record. The volume of paperwork is huge: the office employs some 200 people and has a budget of more than $10 million.Since the August 1997 death of Saundra Banks, who was in the post for 14 years, the clerk's office has foundered.Recordkeeping has become sloppy, morale is bad and a number of disgusted veteran employees have taken jobs elsewhere.
