BERLIN - Kirk Burbage likes to imagine sea captain Henry Johnson standing alone in the cupola of the mansion he built for his bride in 1859, gazing east to Trappe Creek to survey the sailing ships and the fields of his Victorian empire. Somehow, it is a comfort for Burbage to tick off the names of Johnson and the other owners of Merry Sherwood, the magnificent 27-room house he has so lovingly restored. In 142 years, eight families have claimed ownership of the antebellum masterpiece that rises 50 feet above the flat coastal plain about 10 miles from Ocean City, and a mile or so south of Berlin's town limits, on U.S. 113. It's a half-mile west of Trappe Creek.
