Buettner of Reisterstown pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud in U.S. District Court in Baltimore yesterday. In one case, Buettner admitted operating a "sports information service" where he and other accomplices lured customers into wiring more than $700,000 into what the customers thought was a Las Vegas account to be used to make bets on sporting events, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

Dr. Gerald M. Rosen may be a leader in the study of microscopic particles called free radicals, but he committed scientific fraud by using identical graphs of the molecules' action to illustrate reports of different experiments, an expert in the field testified yesterday.Dr. Gary R. Buettner of the University of Iowa testified in Baltimore County Circuit Court that "scientists do make mistakes," and that for that reason he made no comment when he noticed in 1985 that the same graph had appeared in Dr. Rosen's articles of 1980 and 1984.

Dennis Buettner's thousands of weekly radio listeners have no idea what he looks like. But if they were ever to see him, he would appear exactly as they might expect - vaguely middle age, with an easy, back-slapping nature, thinning hair and another feature stereotypically associated with those who enjoy the fine beverages made of barley and hops. No, we don't mean a beer belly. "It's an inactivity belly," Buettner says. He asks that we think about those monks, who many centuries ago made and consumed beer in their monasteries, even receiving a special dispensation from Rome to drink it on Fridays.

Beer drinking is an often maligned but indomitable fact of life, and beer drinkers a generally wholesome, well-intentioned horde of 90 million tipplers, including, let's admit, a few intemperate raffs. It is a passion without parameters arising from a fellowship without an advocate. Doctors have the AMA. Golfers have the PGA. Military veterans have the VFW. Beer drinkers? Indomitable but maligned, they have soldiered on from age to age without superintendence or agency. Until now. To address a stupefying oversight, Dennis Buettner of Severna Park has created the United States Beer Drinking Team -- or USBDT -- and, in the absence of any other candidate, elected himself captain.

Jennifer Buettner grew up in Carroll County, but don't get the wrong idea. Westminster isn't the Wild West. And Jennifer definitely wasn't raised as a "country girl."So when she met Michael Buckley back in October 1996, Jennifer didn't give the chance encounter a second thought. Michael was wearing cowboy boots at the time, and his voice had a slight country twang.A girlfriend had dragged Jennifer to the Lineboro Volunteer Fire Company's annual "haunted hayride." Michael, a member of the company, was selling raffle tickets.
