There are obvious reasons that The Sorcerer is not among the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan operettas: a creaky plot about a love potion turning a quiet English village into a sea of pressing marital intentions; a score that is more pleasant than brilliant and infectious. There are also very good reasons to ignore those flaws and give The Sorcerer a spirited go. That's what the Young Victorian Theatre Company has sensibly - and admirably - chosen to do for its 36th season of dedication to the G&S repertoire.

It is not too much of a stretch to say that the world might not know Gilbert and Sullivan today had it not been for The Sorcerer, the first full-length operetta they created together. It's also not much of a stretch to say that an awful lot of people don't know a note or a line of The Sorcerer. And that's a pity. THE SORCERER -- 3 p.m. today and July 16, and 8 p.m. Thursday and Saturday -- Bryn Mawr School, 109 W. Melrose Ave. // Tickets $35 -- 410-323-3077 or yvtc.org.

Even with its inhabitants constantly referring to things like beheadings and bodies buried alive or oil-boiled, the town of Titipu seems like a more comforting destination than ever right now. At least all the talk of death in this silly burg is just that - talk. Thursday night at the Bryn Mawr School, the Young Victorian Theatre Company took an enthusiastic audience on an amusing journey into Titipu's world of catchy tunes and pre-Monty Python absurdities, as immortalized by Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado.

Saying that drinking has become so prevalent it's almost a rite of passage for Baltimore-area teens - one condoned by some parents - the leaders of nine prominent private schools have launched a wide-ranging campaign against alcohol and drugs. In an unusual show of unity, the leaders of the Gilman School, the Bryn Mawr School, St. Paul's School and other schools say they want to change a weekend culture in which drinking, drug use and rowdy partying have become all too common. They are challenging parents to prohibit the use of alcohol by their children and to stop providing havens for teen-agers to drink.
