A Randallstown man accused of killing his mother-in-law and her daughter execution-style in the basement of their home in New York state to prevent them from testifying against him in a Baltimore County sex abuse case has been convicted of murder. Vernon E. Parker Jr., 34, a truck driver and part-time bounty hunter, could be sentenced to a maximum of life in prison without the possibility of parole in the deaths of Valerie Spears, 50, and her daughter, Devin, 14. The mother and daughter were killed July 20, 2002, in Binghamton, N.Y., 10 days before they were scheduled to testify against Parker in Baltimore County Circuit Court.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - In a quiet, riverfront city nestled among the hills of central New York, a man goes on trial, accused of killing his mother-in-law and her 14-year-old daughter, execution-style. Homicides are rare here - there has been only one this year - and crimes as violent and deliberate as the shootings of Valerie and Devin Spears are all but unheard of. To understand why the woman and her daughter were killed, a prosecutor told a Broome County, N.Y., jury this week, you have to look about 260 miles south: to Baltimore County.

Actually, there are only two parts to a hockey season: When the power play is hitting and when it isn't.A while back, newspapers in New York City took turns pointing out how the hometown NHL Rangers were having a tough time scoring goals with the man advantage. They made it sound as if, when the occasion arose, the Rangers should have seriously considered refusing penalties.A better idea would have been to request a recess and put in a call to Binghamton, the NHL team's farm team in the American Hockey League.

FIRST, IT WAS the sewer backups after rainstorms that never got fixed. Then the power went out every time the squirrels got into the local transformer station. Then the town got stuck with $119 push brooms, while preparing for the volunteer street cleanup day.Taneytown has certainly taken its lumps in public. It even had the unenviable record this month of the lowest voter turnout for a municipal election in Carroll County, with zero opposition to the re-election of three incumbents on the city council.
