COLLEGE PARK - The chronic injury problems that have hampered Maryland backup center Sam Marvis struck again yesterday morning when he dislocated his right shoulder for the third time in a little under a year. Marvis, a 6-foot-3, 265-pound redshirt sophomore, is most likely lost for the season because doctors probably would not operate on the shoulder for a third time in such a short span. "A third operation now wouldn't do him much good," said Maryland coach Ron Vanderlinden. "That's a bad break for us because you don't want to lose your second-team center.

Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen said yesterday that he has no intention of further reprimanding star linebacker E.J. Henderson, whose drunk driving charges were recently refiled by the campus police after being dropped last fall. "When this matter first came up more than four months ago, it was determined that E.J. Henderson violated team rules," Friedgen said in a statement. "He was appropriately disciplined by me in a firm, fair manner." Henderson, an Aberdeen native who was a consensus All-American as a redshirt junior in 2001, was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving under the influence on the College Park campus in the early hours of Sept.

It was the kind of game that helps inexperienced teams mature. While both gained, visiting Calvert Hall profited most with a 58-48 victory over Broadneck in Cape St. Claire last night. The teams were virtually new and played in the Bruins' new gymnasium. Both teams returned only one starter from last season when Calvert Hall won, 54-42.The No. 9-ranked Cardinals (3-0) blew a 16-point lead (34-18) midway through the third period, but pulled away in the final period. Reggie Bryant scored seven of his game-high 15 in the last eight minutes and Don Brandenburg scored six down the stretch.

COLLEGE PARK - Sure, Brooks Barnard would love to fulfill a dream by making big money as a punter in the NFL. As an All-America candidate with the Maryland Terrapins, the junior from Broadneck High is off to a great start. Not that Barnard feels he needs a future in football to be happy. As a kinesiology major, he would like to build a career path in sports medicine or physical education. He thinks further ahead about earning a master's in meteorology, and making a living on a different kind of stage.
