A Westminster family of six was treated at Carroll County General Hospital and released Wednesday after heavy smoke forced them from their apartment, fire authorities said.James Nash Jr., his wife, Sherie, and four children, of Manchester Avenue, suffered minor smoke inhalation before Nash was able to put out a fire inside an oven about 10: 23 p.m.State fire marshals said the appliance's self-clean system malfunctioned, filling the second-floor apartment with thick yellow smoke, and a smoke detector failed to alert the family because its battery was missing.

A Westminster man was being held yesterday on $50,000 bail after being charged in an assault on his live-in girlfriend.Juan Antonio Manresa Leyva, 26, was charged with three counts each of first-degree assault, second-degree assault and use of a dangerous and deadly weapon with intent to injure.Leyva requested a Spanish interpreter for today's bail review hearing in Carroll County District Court.Police said the woman suffered a 2- to 3-inch cut on the neck inflicted with a 13-inch knife found in the kitchen of the couple's Liberty Street apartment.
