Jay Edwards has just two sentences of dialogue -- two sentences! -- to transform himself from a knife-wielding torturer into a bent old man. And just slightly more time to become, in turn, the King of France, a servant, a courtier, a military officer, and a doctor. Rod Brogan has no more than 30 seconds -- 30 seconds! -- to metamorphose from a soldier to a servant. And barely longer to become, in turn, the Duke of Burgundy, a riotous knight, yet another torturer, a peasant wandering the storm-tossed moors and a rifle-toting soldier.

Retail sales inch upRestrained retail sales and subdued inflation continued to characterize the U.S. economy in September, new government statistics showed yesterday.Retail sales rose 0.3 percent last month, a smaller gain than anticipated by people in financial markets, while wholesale prices also climbed 0.3 percent, in line with expectations. The statistics could set the stage for another lowering of interest rates by the Federal Reserve System in an effort to boost an economy that many analysts believe needs a shove.

For golfers with perhaps a double-digit handicap who would like the opportunity to play in a state championship tournament, this one is for you.The Maryland Team Cup format calls for two-man teams, using 80 percent of their handicaps (they must be within seven strokes of each other -- it avoids a one and a 36 destroying a field), playing nine holes scramble and nine holes alternate-shot.This would be in contrast to a scratch event, which caters to the low-handicap players. It's the brainchild of Alec Brogan, a Chestertown native and the head professional at the Liberty Golf Park in Eldersburg.
