The Howard County Parks and Recreation brochure needs to get to Howard County residents. A few years ago, Howard County residents got the brochure delivered to their home. Now, that is not the case. There were so many wonderful programs and trips, and I used to brag to my friends in other counties about this. Now, many of the trips, and I'm not sure about the programs, are canceled for lack of participation. A friend of mine in another county gets the brochure, so I do know about the activities.

Henry Walters and J.P. Morgan were frenemies. Both were the sons of powerful fathers. They didn't come into their own until they reached middle age, when they were widely acknowledged as two of the premier financiers of the Gilded Age. Both displayed an inclination toward collecting art as children. As grown-ups, the two titans competed over who would acquire the next painting or objet d'art. So it's only fitting that portions of a 2,000-year-old Egyptian papyrus known as "The Book of the Faiyum" belonging to institutions founded by each mogul are being displayed for the first time in 150 years in a new exhibit opening Sunday at the Walters Art Museum . "There was this kind of early-20th-century friendly rivalry between J.P. Morgan and Henry Walters," says Julia Marciari-Alexander," the director of the Baltimore museum.

Instead, Commissioners Donald I. Dell and Robin Bartlett Frazier voted to make the pamphlet available at the County Office Building, libraries and community centers. Commissioner Julia Walsh Gouge voted against printing the pamphlet at all. "I don't want it to be a major expense," said Frazier, who created the brochure.

At Dave's Pub in downtown Baltimore, keno players sense that the chances of winning real money aren't worth thinking about."What do you think the odds are if the state is willing to pay you $100,000?" asks Dave Leahy, the co-owner and a daily keno player. The answer, if you want to know, is 8,911,711 to 1.That information cannot be found in the state's brochure, "How To Play Keno," which is available at Dave's and 800 other outlets that have offered the keno lottery game since Jan. 4.Instead, the state chooses to publish "overall odds" for each of the 10 keno games, and one of those descriptions is inaccurate because of a typographical error.

Long before there was a Patuxent Greens Golf Course or Stewart Towers high rise building, a mammoth oval race track occupied that area of land off Route 197, near Route 198. Horse racing at Laurel Park racetrack had been ongoing since 1911, but in 1924 an idea was pitched to the public to construct the Baltimore-Washington Speedway, a new wooden track for auto racing. Promoters issued a slick brochure for potential investors, extolling the benefits of the enterprise and describing the proposed track and how investing in it worked.

It may seem early to book for Presidents Week. But whether prompted by rising airfares or the specter of fewer available flights, tour operators say travelers have been booking unusually early this year. "We've already booked a large number of our guests for '09," said Edward Piegza, president of Classic Journeys, an adventure travel company based in La Jolla, Calif. Just last month, he said, a family of 18 booked a Costa Rica trip for a year-end vacation - in 2009. "That's 18 months in advance," he pointed out. Spotting an opportunity, tour operators are rushing the release of their 2009 brochures and prices particularly early this year to capture early-bird reservations - along with deposits.

Lamone praising the company's equipment after the governor and watchdog groups questioned whether the endorsement violated state ethics laws. The marketing piece was distributed to potential clients at trade shows.

Carroll Commissioner Julia Walsh Gouge is calling for a public hearing on a proposal to build a $14 million water treatment plant at Piney Run. She also wants to halt distribution of a brochure promoting the project because she says it fails to inform residents of alternative water sources. "I want to give people an opportunity to voice their opinion," Gouge said yesterday. "I think we should get all the facts out there. Then, if the people want to go ahead with the Piney Run plant, so be it. I'm disappointed that this brochure doesn't look at other alternatives."

Students at Carroll Community College have been helping to promote two nonprofit organizations and a grant-funded program in the county as part of a class project. Three students in the principles of marketing class last fall opted to take a noncredit honors seminar as part of the college's Community Partnership Project. The seminar involved doing a service-learning project with a community organization to get hands-on experience in marketing. "The honors marketing class is part of the college's service-learning, which encourages faculty to work in a community service curriculum so the students can learn community service as well as marketing," said Sylvia Blair, Carroll's community relations coordinator.

"Bait and switch" is one of the oldest techniques in the book for disreputable merchants trying to lure customers to their stores. The merchant advertises an item at an unbelievably low price. That's the bait. It could be anything from a car to a TV set. But when the customer arrives in the store, the advertised item is no longer in stock, and the merchant sets about trying to persuade the customer to buy a more expensive model that just happens to be in stock. That's the switch. And it's illegal.
