Beth Tfiloh baseball coach Jeff Lowe believed his team was playoff-caliber last season. A few mistakes late in the schedule, though, cost the Warriors a spot in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference playoffs. "I think that we underachieved toward the end," Lowe said. "I thought we gave games away with mental mistakes, but I think that this year we would have competed very well." Beth Tfiloh, now in the C Conference, has managed to limit such mistakes this time.

For the fourth consecutive year, enrollment at Baltimore County's public schools has declined slightly, according to a report discussed during last night's school board meeting. The school system, which has 106,182 children this year, had nearly 1,000 fewer students as of Sept. 30 than it had at the same time last year. It has nearly 3,000 fewer than it did at the same time in 2003. School officials, who had projected a more modest decline from last year's enrollment of 107,386 students, said the issue of crowded classrooms persists largely because the decline represents the system overall, not specific schools.

Gas station is a full-service relic When cars roll into Charlie's Service Station and over one of the strategically positioned hoses, a bell inside the shop clanks. It's not a melodious jingle, not an electronic buzz. Just a metallic heads-up for Chris or Wayne or whoever's there. Clank-clank. Guys? Step out from your air-conditioned lair of crackers, soda pop and bait. Clank-clank. Hustle over to that idling Ford. Clank-clank. Deliver the line, the one that, just like that, melts a good 20 years from an old gal's calendar: "Ma'am, what can I get for ya?"
