The senior forward scored clutch goals to lead the No. 5 Bruins to big victories against perennial state powers No. 6 Severna Park and Bethesda-Chevy Chase last week. In a 2-1 win over the defending Class 4A state champion Falcons, Meehan scored a goal in each half to help the Bruins (2-1) snap a four-game losing streak against their Anne Arundel County rival that dated back to 2009. On Friday, Meehan also scored twice as the Bruins defeated Class 4A state runner-up Bethesda-Chevy Chase, 4-0. Now in her third year on varsity, Meehan finished with seven goals and two assists in her junior year.

A week into the new school year, Broadneck center midfielder Emily Lord is loving her senior gig. She's quick to say it's completely different. She's finished with her classes at 10:30 a.m. every day. In her third year on varsity, she is a captain for the No. 6 Bruins. And she's learning a new position after playing her first two years at forward. It has been a lot to take in, and Lord is excited and primed for a banner year. Lord showed a fine ability to distribute the ball last season - finishing with eight assists to go with three goals - and she'll have the chance to set up teammates even more this fall with the ball at her feet more in the middle.

Old Mill's football players came into their home opener Friday night with a chip on their collective shoulder. They wanted to prove it's time to talk about current Patriots such as Marcus Hicks, Jalen Jones and Carl Chance instead of dwelling on the talent they lost from last year's Class 4A state championship team. Against Anne Arundel County foe Broadneck, the host Patriots proved they could pick up right where the state title team left off despite graduating 16 starters, including running back Rob Chesson and his state-record 49 touchdowns.

Matt Centrowitz Sr. does not recall ever sitting down with his son Matthew to regale him with tales of being an Olympian, or to explain the thrill and responsibility of representing the United States on the world's most-watched athletic stage. They never needed that sort of session. Running, and doing so at the highest levels, was a constant currency in the Centrowitz house, one that streamed through everything. Matthew never had to ask about the Olympics; the men his father spoke to, who came to family gatherings, who were at the other end of vacation trips, so many of them had been there.

Former Broadneck track and field star Matthew Centrowitz gave up his senior year of eligibility at Oregon in November to turn professional and improve his chances of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics in London. On Sunday, Centrowitz could look back on that difficult decision and know he made the right one. At the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in Eugene, Ore., Sunday, Centrowitz took the lead early in the final lap of the 1,500 meters, but was passed with about 25 meters to go by U.S. Olympic veteran Leonel Manzano.

The Owls opened with a 6-1 lead before the Knights cut the lead to 6-4 at the half. Century's Madi Hall led all scorers with four goals. Morgan Torggler knows girls lacrosse games last 50 minutes in high school. She also knows that her No. 7-ranked Severna Park team needed to be on point for all 50 of them to defeat No. 10 Broadneck, 8-7, in a pivotal Anne Arundel County game Friday night. Torggler's four goals keyed the No. 7 Falcons' (10-0) offense, but it was Severna Park's defense - and a key save by keeper Camille King with 1:31 left - that won the game for the home team. "That was sure stressful at the end," said Torggler, a junior.

The Gophers lost, 11-6, to unranked Northeast on Tuesday, and host No. 8 Broadneck put together a five-run rally in the fourth Thursday to beat them, 5-1. Eagles right-hander Emilee Pslueger (4-3) gave up one unearned run in the first inning before settling down. She gave up six hits and two walks and struck out three. Broadneck's Nicole Blackwell hit an RBI double in the five-run fourth-inning rally.
