Even after placing her name in the running to become the next student member of the Anne Arundel County school board, Broadneck High School junior Else Drooff wasn't certain she wanted the job. In fact, she said so during her campaign speech. "Up until that point, I've always done a little bit of everything," said Drooff, a four-time recipient of the Carson Scholarship Fund Award, an honor given to students who maintain good grades while being active in their communities. Initially, she said, she was reluctant to make a commitment to the school board but "realized that this is something that I really wanted to put all of my time into.

An Anne Arundel County high school teacher and basketball coach, facing charges related to an alleged relationship with a student, turned herself in to police on Tuesday. Police said Broadneck High School English teacher Erin Thorne, 28, and a senior student exchanged nude pictures of themselves through text messages beginning in the boy's senior year in September 2010. Police said they determined the two exchanged the text messages before the student was 18, and later they had a sexual relationship that began after he turned 18. The student, now 19, graduated in spring 2011, authorities said.

Broadneck All-Metro kicker Adam Greene, who holds the state record for most field goals in a career and kicked a 55-yard field goal last fall, has committed to play football for Maryland. The senior, who had narrowed his list to Maryland, Navy and Wake Forest, orally committed last week after he was offered a preferred walk-on spot. He said said he made his decision before news broke of Maryland's impending move to the Big Ten. Green said the Terrapins coaches told him he has a good chance to earn a merit scholarship based on his 4.45 weighted GPA. He has never gotten anything but an A in high school and said academics drove his decision to go to Maryland.
