When the captivating Rev. C. Anthony Muse took the pulpit at the funeral of a fellow state senator last month, he repeated a phrase throughout his eulogy like a gospel choir singing a refrain: "Well done, Senator Britt, we'll take it from here." To many listeners in the pews that day, the phrase was a poignant way for Muse to pay tribute to the late Sen. Gwendolyn T. Britt and her long history as an activist. But the gay and lesbian attendees, who were shifting in the pews to exchange knowing looks, hoped the phrase meant something more.

State Senate, governor honor Senator Britt With about 20 family members of the late Sen. Gwendolyn T. Britt in attendance, the Maryland Senate paid tribute yesterday to the Prince George's County lawmaker and civil rights activist, who died Saturday. Gov. Martin O'Malley told the overflowing chamber that Britt was "deeply loved throughout our state" and was "one of the strongest and classiest senators that ever walked these floors." The five-year Democratic state senator, who was jailed in 1961 for protesting segregationist Jim Crow laws in Mississippi, also campaigned for civil rights on behalf of ex-offenders and homosexuals.

Prince George's County senator and civil rights activist Gwendolyn T. Britt died early yesterday, shortly after being taken to Doctor's Community Hospital in Lanham, according to a spokeswoman for Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller. She was 66. She had not been feeling well and was absent from the General Assembly's session Friday, the spokeswoman said. The cause of death was not available. The five-year Democratic state senator was expected to introduce legislation this year that would legalize same-sex marriage in Maryland - and by agreeing to do so, she had become a "hero" to that community, wrote Dan Furmansky, executive director of Equality Maryland.
